Klarna is a buy now pay later (BNPL) service that lets shoppers split purchases into installments and pay over time instead of upfront. For merchants running an eCommerce website, offering Klarna at checkout can reduce cart abandonment and increase average order value.

This guide covers how Klarna works, what each payment plan offers and how to connect it to your Wix store. Wix Payments is a secure payment solution built by Wix to make online transactions safer and offering flexible options like Klarna is part of building a checkout experience that converts.

TL;DR: what is Klarna?

Klarna pays merchants upfront and handles repayment from the shopper. The three plans are Pay in 4, Pay in 30 days and monthly financing. Adding Klarna can lift conversions and order value, at the cost of a transaction fee.

On the infrastructure side, Wix eCommerce maintains 99.9% uptime with PCI-compliant, multi-cloud infrastructure, so when you connect Klarna to your store, you're building on a payment setup that's built for reliability. You can add Klarna through Wix Payments or as a standalone provider.

What is Klarna and how does it work?

Klarna is a leading fintech company and one of the best payment solutions for flexible online shopping. Founded in Sweden in 2005 and now listed on the New York Stock Exchange, it offers BNPL services to over 118 million active consumers and works with more than 966,000 merchants globally. Unlike credit cards or traditional payment methods, Klarna lets shoppers complete a purchase now and pay for it later, in installments or after a short delay.

When a shopper selects Klarna at checkout, Klarna runs a soft credit check and, if approved, pays the merchant the full purchase amount immediately. The customer then repays Klarna on the schedule they chose. For merchants, this means no credit risk. If a customer doesn't pay Klarna back, that's Klarna's problem. You also get fraud and chargeback protection as part of the arrangement.

Shoppers can use Klarna through the app, via a one-time virtual card that works anywhere Visa is accepted or directly at checkout on any partnered merchant site. For context on how it fits into the broader eCommerce payment processing landscape, Klarna sits between a traditional credit card and a short-term loan, with less friction and no long application process.

Payment methods like Klarna are one part of the checkout equation. On the broader commerce side, Wix eCommerce enables agentic commerce where products are discoverable and purchasable through AI assistants via PayPal and Stripe. For merchants, that means your store can be found and transacted with by AI agents acting on behalf of shoppers, without them manually browsing your site.

Klarna payment plans explained

Klarna offers several payment plans in the US. The right one depends on the purchase amount, repayment speed and whether the buyer is comfortable with the terms for longer financing.

01. Pay in 4

Pay in 4 splits the total into four equal installments due every two weeks. The first payment is due when the order ships. No interest is charged when payments are made on time.

02. Pay in 30 days

Pay in 30 days lets shoppers receive their order and pay the full amount within 30 days of shipping. Nothing is due at checkout and there's no interest when paid on time.

03. Pay over time (monthly financing)

Pay over time offers monthly financing from 6 to 24 months for larger purchases. Interest may apply depending on creditworthiness. This is the only Klarna plan that reports payment history to credit bureaus. If you sell to customers in multiple countries, Klarna's plan availability varies by market.

Wix enables merchants to sell internationally with multi-currency payments, so you can handle both payment flexibility and cross-border selling from the same platform.

What merchants need to know about Klarna

Adding Klarna to your store is a real tradeoff. On the upside, offering BNPL can help reduce cart abandonment and increase average order value. On the cost side, merchants pay a transaction fee per Klarna purchase. Exact rates are confirmed during Klarna's merchant onboarding.

"Once customers notice that there are shipping costs at checkout, there is a high risk that they will abandon the purchase and look for alternative providers."— Lisa Kammermayer, Chief Marketing Officer at SimpleSell

The same principle applies to payment flexibility. Giving shoppers more ways to pay at checkout, including BNPL options like Klarna, reduces the moments where a customer hesitates or drops off before completing their order.

Klarna assumes all default risk, so you receive the full purchase amount (minus fees) regardless of whether the customer pays Klarna back. You'll want to review Klarna's list of prohibited goods and services before applying.

Laurel Murray, founder of Kissamo (a handmade pet ID tag brand based in Vancouver), put it plainly when describing how adding Wix Payments changed her operation: "Wix Payments has been useful as we juggle both online and in-person events and it can even handle the high level of customization we offer." For a small business managing bespoke orders alongside live event sales, that kind of flexibility removes friction at checkout without adding complexity for the merchant.

Wix supports high-performance eCommerce operations with AI-driven product recommendations, automated eCommerce discount logic, abandoned cart recovery and customizable checkout workflows. Adding Klarna is one piece of that eCommerce checkout optimization picture. For a broader look at payment options, see our guide on how to accept payments online.

How to add Klarna to your Wix store

There are two ways to connect Klarna on Wix. Wix eCommerce lets business owners sell products, services, bookings, courses, memberships and donations from one platform, no plugins required. Klarna integrates directly into that setup.

Jonathan Loake, founder of Aluminium Rainflow, has run his solo eCommerce business on Wix for eight years. "About 50% of my sales come through the website through the eCommerce platform that you provide. The other 50% is through leads again through the website." Adding flexible payment options like Klarna is one more lever for converting those visits into completed orders.
