.holdings domain FAQ

What kinds of firms use a .holdings domain?

A .holdings domain is used by businesses that exist above other businesses. Parent companies and group entities are the obvious case, and around them sit family offices, private investment vehicles, property holding companies and founders who have several trading names and want one address over the top of them.

It is also used simply as a status word by smaller companies whose structure is nothing like a group, which is worth knowing because it means the extension does not by itself tell a visitor how large you are. What the address does reliably signal is that the entity behind it is a holder rather than a trading brand.

Is .holdings restricted to holding companies?

No, .holdings is not restricted, and nothing requires you to actually own subsidiaries. The registry agreement carries an open registration commitment barring the operator from limiting eligibility by identity, and there is no eligibility test, verification step or community specification attached to the extension.

Sellers describe the target market in confident terms, naming investment firms, private equity and family offices, but that is positioning rather than policy. A sole trader can register a .holdings name as easily as a listed group can.

Does having Holdings in my domain create any legal obligation?

No, a .holdings domain creates no obligation, because the rules that govern the word attach to a legal company name on a public register and not to a web address. Company law in some places has historically controlled words like Holdings, Group and International in a registered name, and none of that reaches the domain.

In the United Kingdom, Holdings is no longer on the list of sensitive words needing approval, though it still has an effect on company naming: a name containing Holdings or Group is not treated as the same name as an existing company, which is a registration nicety rather than a restriction.

So keep the two apart. If you want Holdings in your legal entity name, check your own company registry rules. If you only want it in your web address, there is nothing to check.

Is .holdings a regulated financial extension?

No, .holdings is not a regulated financial extension, despite how some sellers describe it. When ICANN sorted new extensions by sector it built an explicit financial group containing .capital, .cash, .finance, .financial, .fund, .investments, .loans, .money, .credit, .tax and others, and .holdings appears in neither that group nor any other.

One large seller nonetheless calls the extension specific to the financial sector and pitches it at stockbrokers and day traders. That framing has no basis in the contract, and it matters only because it can make a buyer think an approval is needed when none is.

Should I pick .holdings or .ltd?

Pick .holdings for what the entity does and .ltd for what the entity is. .holdings says this company sits above others, while .ltd, .llc and .inc name a legal form and read as a company-registry suffix.

There is a policy difference too. The corporate-form extensions were classified by ICANN as corporate identifier strings and carry sector safeguards, and .holdings was left out of that grouping entirely. For a group entity the descriptive word usually reads better, and it does not tie your address to a legal form you might later change.

Can one .holdings domain serve a group with several brands?

Yes, and that is the arrangement the extension handles best. The .holdings address carries the group: the corporate story, the leadership, the investor material and the list of businesses you own, while each trading brand keeps its own domain and its own customers.

Done this way the group site does not compete with the brands for search traffic, because it targets an entirely different audience. Link out to each subsidiary from the group site and back from each subsidiary footer, and the structure explains itself to anyone trying to work out who owns what.

Why is there no cheap first year on .holdings?

A .holdings domain is one of the few extensions sold at close to the same price in year one and every year after, so the deep opening discount most extensions use is largely absent here. Several sellers list registration and renewal at the same figure, and the cheapest first year sits near the ordinary renewal rate.

That is better news than it sounds. There is no cliff waiting in year two, so the price you see is close to the price you keep paying, and you can budget it as a fixed annual cost rather than as a promotion that expires. Short and desirable names can still carry a registry premium well above that, so check the specific name rather than the extension.

Is .holdings recognized outside corporate circles?

Less than you might assume, and that is the honest caveat. Holdings is a word from company structure, so it lands well with investors, bankers, advisers and anyone reading a corporate filing, and it means little to a retail customer who simply wants to buy something.

That is an argument for where to use it rather than against using it. A .holdings address is well suited to a group site aimed at professional readers, and poorly suited to a consumer-facing shop, which is exactly the division of labor the extension is built around.
