.support domain FAQ

What kind of organizations use a .support domain?

.support domains are used by two groups that share a word. On one side, software companies, IT firms, managed service providers, help desks and independent consultants. On the other, charities, campaigns, fundraisers and peer support groups.

For the first group the extension names a function. It marks the part of a business where customers go when something has gone wrong, which is a distinct job from the marketing site.

For the second it names a relationship. An address ending in .support reads as an invitation to back something, and that works for a cause page, a mutual aid group or a memorial fund.

Do I need to run a help desk to register a .support domain?

No, .support is open to anyone with no eligibility requirements. There is no verification of your business type, no location rule and no documentation to submit.

The registry publishes portfolio-wide policies rather than anything specific to .support, and the contract it operates under is the standard unrestricted kind. Nothing checks what the site is for.

So a one-person consultancy, a school, a hobby community or a charity can register a name as easily as a software company. It is first come, first served, and availability is the only limit.

Does .support mean technical help or supporting a cause?

.support carries both meanings, and neither one has won. Sellers market it both ways, sometimes on the same page.

The word you put in front decides it. “acmesoftware.support” is unmistakably a help desk. “localfoodbank.support” is unmistakably a cause. Trouble only arrives when the name in front is neutral and the visitor has to guess.

This ambiguity is usually an asset. It means the extension is available for a use that a narrower word would exclude, and the meaning is entirely under your control as long as the name does the work.

Should I use a .support domain or a support subdomain on my main site?

For most businesses a subdomain like support.yourbrand.com is the simpler choice, and a .support domain earns its place in specific situations. It is worth being honest about that.

A subdomain costs nothing, inherits the recognition of your main name and is the pattern customers already know. A separate .support domain costs money every year and starts from zero familiarity. What it buys you is a short, memorable address that can be said out loud, printed on a product, or handed to someone who does not know your brand name yet.

The clearest case for the domain is hardware, packaging and print, where you want a short address on a label. The clearest case for the subdomain is a web-only product where nobody will ever type the help address by hand. You can also do both, with the .support name redirecting to the subdomain.

Can I use a .support domain just for email?

Yes, a .support domain can be used for email alone, with no website behind it, and that is a legitimate setup.

You point the mail records at your provider and leave the web records pointing wherever you like, including at a redirect to your main site. An address like help@yourbrand.support then works as a public contact route that says what it is for.

Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC on it properly. Support mail is often the first message a customer receives from you, and an unauthenticated reply landing in spam is worse than no reply at all.

Can I get a short .support name for my brand?

A short .support name is usually obtainable, because the extension is far less contested than mainstream ones and most buyers only need their own brand name in front of it.

The rules allow names from one to sixty-three characters, so very short options exist on paper. In practice single letters and plain dictionary words are the ones registries hold back or price as premium, and that reserved list is not published.

Your brand name on its own is usually the right answer here. The extension already says what the page is for, so putting a word like help or service in front of it repeats work the address is doing for you.

What does a .support domain cost if it goes on packaging or a manual?

A .support domain that will appear on packaging or in a printed manual should be priced as a long-term commitment rather than a one-year purchase.

Introductory offers can sit at a quarter or less of the ongoing yearly price, and some large sellers advertise the first year without publishing the renewal on the same page. That matters more here than on most extensions, because an address printed on hardware cannot quietly be changed later.

So register for several years at once, turn on auto-renew, and keep the billing details current. A support address that stops resolving becomes a support problem in itself, and the people hitting it are already having a bad day.

Could customers mistake a .support address for a scam?

Some customers may treat an unfamiliar .support address cautiously, and that is worth planning for rather than dismissing. Fake help desks are a well-known tactic, so people are right to be careful.

The risk is specific: an address that looks close to a brand name but is not on the brand’s usual domain is exactly the shape a phishing attempt takes. A customer who has never seen your .support name has no way to tell the difference from the address alone.

So make the connection visible. Link to the .support domain from your main site, mention it in your published contact details, use it consistently rather than occasionally, and never introduce it for the first time in an unsolicited message. If your customers are cautious by default, a subdomain on your main name avoids the question altogether.
