.cl domain FAQ
Who is a .cl domain for?
A .cl domain is the national address of Chile, so it is the natural fit for businesses, organizations and creators who serve Chilean customers. Online shops, local service providers, startups and professionals can use it to show visitors the site is built for Chile.
If you sell mostly outside Chile, treat the .cl as a local-market address next to a more general domain.
Can I register a .cl domain if I do not live in Chile?
Yes, you can register a .cl domain from outside Chile. NIC Chile, the registry, accepts any person or company, Chilean or foreign, and foreign holders do not need a Chilean representative.
A Chilean ID number is optional, and a foreign holder can give an equivalent ID issued by a public authority instead. The registry also requires an administrative contact on the record, so decide who that will be before you register.
Can I use accents or the letter ñ in a .cl domain?
Yes, a .cl domain can include the letters á, é, í, ó, ú, ü and ñ alongside a-z, digits and hyphens. Accented names count toward the 63-character limit in their encoded form, so they leave less room than plain names.
Check that your customers can type the accented letters on their keyboards before you choose an accented spelling, and consider registering the plain spelling too.
Should I choose a .cl or a .com for a Chilean business?
A .cl domain makes more sense than a .com when most of your customers are in Chile and you want the address to say so. A .com is the stronger main address for a global audience, because it carries no country signal.
If you want both, register the .cl, keep one address as primary and redirect the other to it. Update your email signature, social profiles and Google Business Profile to the primary address so visitors see one consistent name.
Does a .cl domain rank outside Chile?
A .cl domain can rank outside Chile, but Google reads it as a signal that the site is meant for Chilean users. Google treats country-code domains as a strong geographic signal, and .cl is not on its short list of country codes handled as generic.
That helps with a Chilean audience. For a global audience, keep a general domain as your main address and point the .cl at it.
Does .cl use the UDRP when someone holds my brand?
A .cl dispute does not go through the UDRP. NIC Chile runs its own revocation procedure with an arbitrator, and the ruling cannot be appealed.
Anyone who believes the registration affects their rights can file. After the first 30 days, you must show that the name is similar to a name or mark you hold rights in, that the holder has no legitimate interest and that it was registered in bad faith. If the name matters to your brand, registering it yourself is simpler.
What can the .cl registry do to my domain?
NIC Chile can suspend a .cl domain used for phishing, malware or botnets, and it can delete one whose mandatory holder data is incomplete or wrong if it is not fixed within 5 days of an email request.
The registry treats the contact emails on the record as your legal address for notices. Use a shared role address that will outlive any one person, and update your registrar whenever your details change.
