A .auto domain is a generic top-level domain (TLD) for the automotive world. Automotive technology companies, electric vehicle makers and mobility startups are who shows up, alongside brand owners protecting their own name.

.auto domain FAQ

What kinds of automotive companies use a .auto domain?

A .auto domain is held mostly by the technology end of the industry rather than by retail motoring. Live examples include an American electric vehicle manufacturer and a driverless trucking company whose commercial runs have been covered in the business press, and around them sit mobility and automotive software products.

The second group is not really using the extension at all. A large share of the zone is held through brand-protection registrars, which is companies registering their own name to keep it away from others rather than building anything on it.

Does the .auto registry check anything before it issues a name?

No, the .auto registry checks nothing about who you are or what you sell. There is no eligibility condition, no trade requirement and no verification step, and one large seller states plainly that registration is not limited to any country or industry.

The only real gate is commercial. Names in this extension carry a price in the low thousands of dollars a year, which filters the zone far more effectively than any eligibility rule would.

Is .auto the same as .car and .cars?

Not the same, but closely matched. All three list the same sponsoring company in the root database today, though they arrived there by different routes, and their retail prices at the sellers we checked are closely aligned rather than provably identical.

The differences that matter are the word and the size. .auto is the broadest of the three, covering the industry rather than the vehicle, and it is the largest of them, though all three are tiny zones by any standard. .car reads as a single vehicle and holds fewer names still. For a buyer the practical upshot is that switching between the three gains you very little, so choose on the word and stop comparing.

Is .auto a good fit for a dealership or a repair shop?

A .auto domain fits a dealership or a workshop perfectly well as a word, but almost nobody in that part of the trade is using it. Franchise dealers, parts retailers and repair shops did not appear among the developed sites, and the visible population is automotive technology and vehicle manufacturing.

That matters if you are choosing a domain for a local garage. The address would describe you accurately, but you would be paying a four-figure annual price for an extension your customers have never seen, and a cheaper, more familiar word would do the same job. .taxi is worth comparing if passenger transport rather than vehicles is the business.

Who else holds .auto names?

Two brand-protection registrars hold more than a fifth of the .auto zone between them, which tells you the extension is treated as a name to defend as much as a place to build. Those are the agents that large companies use to register their own trademarks across extensions.

For a buyer that is useful context rather than a warning. It means the obvious brand names are gone and unlikely ever to be for sale, and it means the names that are still open are the descriptive and invented ones, which is where a new automotive product would want to be anyway.

Why does a .auto domain cost thousands of dollars a year?

A .auto domain is priced in the low thousands of dollars annually because the registry sets it there, not because a seller has added a markup. The figure is close to the same across sellers, and it is the reason the whole zone holds only a few hundred names.

The renewal does not drop to a small maintenance fee either. At every seller we checked the renewal is at least as high as the first year and sometimes higher, so price this as a recurring four-figure commitment rather than a one-off purchase, and check the specific name in case it carries a premium above the standard rate.

Is a short invented name better on .auto?

Yes, a short invented word is usually the better buy on .auto, because at this price a long descriptive address wastes what you are paying for. The extension already supplies the industry, so the name in front of it only has to supply the identity.

That is what the developed sites on the extension have done, taking single short words rather than phrases. Avoid stacking a second automotive word in front of it, since repeating the category makes the address longer without making it clearer, and avoid anything that needs spelling out on a phone call.

Does a .auto address help a company look established?

A .auto address reads as deliberate and expensive to anyone who knows the extension, and as unfamiliar to everyone else. Because the zone holds only a few hundred names worldwide, almost nobody will have seen one before, so the address will be doing its own explaining.

That cuts in favor of a funded product launch and against a local business. If you are introducing a new automotive technology brand, an address nobody else has is an asset and the price is a signal in itself. If you need customers to recall an address after hearing it once, a familiar extension does more for you.
