What is a .si domain

A .si domain is the official country code domain of Slovenia, and anyone in the world can register one. Like every ccTLD it signals a link to its country first. Since the US government adopted the terms "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in September 2026, the .si extension has also caught the eye of AI companies and domain investors.

TL;DR: what is .si domain

The .si extension has been Slovenia's country code since 1992 and is open to registrants anywhere. Its recent link with super intelligence is a branding trend, not a change to what the extension officially means. This guide covers the rules, the costs and how .si affects search before you register one.

You'll learn:

  • What .si means and who manages it

  • Who can register one and the naming rules

  • Registration and renewal costs

  • How .si compares with .ai and .com

  • What the extension means for international SEO

What does .si stand for?

The .si extension stands for Slovenia, or Slovenija in Slovene. It's the two-letter code the international ISO standard gives the country, which is why it became Slovenia's official domain in 1992, shortly after independence.

Slovenia would probably have picked .sl, but that code already belonged to Sierra Leone. So .si it was, and it has served Slovenian companies, public bodies and personal projects ever since.

The domain is managed by Register.si, the national registry run by ARNES, the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia. The registry sets the rules and accredited registrars sell the names to the public.

Why .si domains are suddenly popular

For decades .si was a quiet local extension. That changed after September 29, 2026, when a White House executive order directed US federal agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in place of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" in official communications. The order applies only to government wording and says nothing about domains, but the overlap with Slovenia's code didn't go unnoticed.

Registrations rose quickly. Register.si recorded 46,066 new .si domains in September 2026, and on October 26, 2026 its homepage showed about 453,600 registered .si domains in total. These counts change daily, so check the registry for the latest figures.

Not every buyer is building a site. A security research firm found that about half of the .si names registered through one registrar over four days in September were later offered for resale. At the same time, AI companies and established brands have registered names that match their own. Interest is high, but nobody knows yet how lasting the super intelligence association will be.

.si domain rules and requirements

The .si registry keeps its rules simple compared with many other country codes. Here's what to know before you register.

01. Who can register a .si domain

Anyone can register a .si domain. The registry defines a holder as any person or company, with no residency or citizenship condition, so you don't need a Slovenian address or business. Complete applications are handled first come first served.

You register through an accredited registrar rather than with the registry directly. You'll give your name, address and a contact email at checkout. The registry requires that email to stay valid, with direct access by you, for as long as you hold the domain.

02. Length and allowed characters

A .si name can be 2 to 63 characters long. You can use letters, numbers and hyphens, but a hyphen can't sit at the start or end of the name. Two hyphens in a row in the third and fourth positions aren't allowed either, except in the technical form of a name with special characters.

The registry supports letters from the Slovene alphabet such as č, š and ž, along with other accented Latin letters. These are called internationalized domain names. The registry's own example is roža.si, which browsers handle in the background as xn--roa-d3a.si.

A name in its native spelling looks natural to Slovene speakers. Visitors without those letters on their keyboard may find it harder to type, so many owners also register the plain version, such as roza.si, and point it to the same site.

03. Reserved names

Some names are off limits. Reserved names include 112.si and 113.si, Slovenia's emergency numbers, and si.si and rs.si, which are kept for the Republic of Slovenia. The registry keeps a few other restricted names too, so a search will tell you if a name can't be registered.

04. Registration terms and price

You can register a .si domain for one to five years and renew it before it expires. If you change your mind, you can cancel a new registration within 16 days as long as you haven't started using the domain.

The registry doesn't set a separate premium tier, but that doesn't mean every name costs the same. Registrars set their own prices, and names that someone else already owns can sell on the aftermarket for far more. Check the first-year and renewal domain pricing for the exact name you want before you commit.

As a rough guide, most registrars list a first year of a .si domain at about $10 to $16, with renewals at about $11 to $24 a year. Promotions can push the first year lower, so compare the cost over two or three years rather than the first year alone.

05. What happens when a .si domain expires

If you don't renew in time, the domain enters a quarantine period on its expiry date. Your website and email on that domain stop working, but the name stays reserved for you for up to 30 days.

Renew during quarantine and the domain comes back to life. After 30 days the registry deletes it and anyone can register it on a first come first served basis. Turning on auto-renewal is the easiest way to avoid this.

06. Disputes over a .si name

Disputes over .si names go through the registry's own alternative dispute resolution procedure, known as ARDS, rather than the process used by many generic extensions. An independent arbiter, or a panel of three, decides each case. Proceedings run in Slovene and there is no appeal against the decision.

To win, a complainant has to prove three things. The name must be identical or confusingly similar to a right recognized in Slovenia, such as a trademark valid there or a company name in the Slovenian court register. The holder must have no legitimate interest in the name. The name must also have been registered or used in bad faith.

If all three are proven, the arbiter can order the domain deleted or transferred to the complainant. Registering your brand name early makes it harder for others to take it and helps you avoid domain squatting. It doesn't guarantee protection, though, because someone with stronger rights can still win a dispute later.

Is a .si domain good for SEO?

A .si domain sends Google a geographic signal linked to Slovenia. Google treats a short list of country codes such as .co and .io as generic, and .si isn't on that list. For a site aimed at Slovenian visitors, that signal works in your favor.

A .si site can still rank in other countries. The extension is only one factor, and relevant content, site quality and links still matter more. If most of your customers are outside Slovenia, though, a generic extension is usually the more natural fit for your main address.

Expert tip from Keren Friedlander, Product Manager at Wix:

"There’s a positive correlation between clear and relevant domain name and strong online visibility. I can say that a thoughtfully chosen domain name impacts the brand’s exposure."

Is .si or .com better for a global business?

A .si domain can work for an international business, but it tells visitors and search engines that you have a connection to Slovenia. A .com carries no country signal, so it's usually the stronger main address for a global audience.

How you use both depends on your goal. If you only want to protect your brand, register the .si and redirect it to your main .com site. Visitors who type the .si address land in the right place and search engines focus on one site.

If you want to serve Slovenian and international customers separately, a simple redirect isn't enough. You'd run a Slovenian version of the site on the .si domain with content in Slovene and tell search engines which version is meant for which audience. That takes more work, but it gives each market a site built for it.

.si vs .ai: which one fits your project?

Both extensions started as country codes and both now have an AI association. The differences show up in price, search treatment and how familiar each one is to your audience.

.si vs .ai

01. Meaning

The .ai extension belongs to Anguilla, a small Caribbean territory, but the tech world adopted it as shorthand for artificial intelligence years ago. The .si extension belongs to Slovenia and picked up its super intelligence association only in 2026. For now, .ai is the extension most people link with AI products, while .si is the newer and less tested option.

02. Price

A .si domain usually costs much less than a .ai. Most registrars list .si at about $10 to $16 for the first year and $11 to $24 to renew. A .ai domain often costs about $90 or more a year and requires at least two years at a time, so the first purchase alone can pass $180.

03. Search signal

Google treats .ai as a generic extension, so a .ai site isn't tied to one country. A .si domain still carries a geographic signal for Slovenia. That makes .ai the more natural pick if most of your search traffic comes from elsewhere.

04. Adoption

The .ai extension has a long track record with startups, investors and users. The .si extension is still finding its footing, and nobody knows yet how long the super intelligence association will stick. Some buyers register both and point one at the other.

Who should get a .si domain?

A .si domain makes the most sense when the name itself says something about you or your audience. Here's who gets the most out of one.

  • Slovenian businesses and creators. A .si address tells local customers right away that your site is built for them.

  • AI and tech projects. Teams working on super intelligence can use a .si as a short brandable address or as a second address beside their main domain.

  • Brand owners. Registering your brand as a .si makes it harder for someone else to claim the name first.

  • Fans of word play. In Slovene "si" means "you are" and it sounds like "yes" in Spanish and Italian, which opens the door to clever domain hacks.

Buying .si names only to resell them is a gamble. The trend is new, renewal fees add up across many names and there's no guarantee a name will sell.

How to register a .si domain with Wix

Wix makes it easy to go from a .si idea to a live site. As an ICANN-accredited registrar with more than 400 domain extensions, Wix lets you search, register and manage your .si domain from the same dashboard as your website and business email. Wix lists .si domains starting at $13.34 for the first year, and you'll see the renewal price before you check out.

Once your domain is registered, you can connect it to a site you build with the Wix's website builder and get free hosting plus a free SSL certificate on your .si address. Beyond registration, Wix includes built-in tools for DNS management and domain security.

01. Search for your .si name

Type the name you want into the Wix domain search to see if the .si version is available. If it's taken, try a short variation or compare related extensions at the same time.

02. Compare your options

Look at your .si result next to other extensions before you decide. If your audience is global, you might register the .si alongside a generic domain and redirect one to the other.

03. Register your domain

Add the .si domain to your cart, enter your contact details and choose your registration period. Use an email address you'll keep long term, since the .si registry needs a working contact email for the life of the domain.

04. Connect it to your site

Point your new .si domain to your Wix site, and Wix handles the hosting, SSL and DNS settings for you. You can also set up a business email on your .si domain so your inbox matches your site.

.si domain FAQ

What country is .si?

The .si extension is the country code for Slovenia, a country in Central Europe. It has been Slovenia's official domain since 1992 and is managed by the national registry Register.si, which is run by ARNES. Anyone can register one, wherever they live.

No. Officially, .si is Slovenia's country code and that hasn't changed. The super intelligence association comes from a September 2026 US executive order about government wording, and it's a branding trend rather than an official meaning of the extension.

Yes. The .si extension is a legitimate country code run by a national registry that supports DNSSEC and has its own dispute procedure. Keep in mind that the registry's public WHOIS records show the email address of individual holders and fuller details for organizations. You can use a role address instead of a personal one.

Most registrars list the first year at about $10 to $16 and renewals at about $11 to $24 a year. Wix lists .si domains starting at $13.34 for the first year. Names bought from other owners on the aftermarket can cost much more.

Yes. Once you register a .si domain you can create a professional address that ends in .si. That keeps your email consistent with your website and makes your brand look more established.

No. SI units are the International System of Units used in science, like meters and kilograms. The .si domain is Slovenia's country code, and its newer super intelligence association has nothing to do with measurement.

The registry requires every holder to keep a valid contact email that they can access directly. If you don't meet that requirement, the registry has the right to delete the domain on its own initiative and it skips the usual 30-day quarantine. Use a shared address that will outlive any one employee and update your registrar whenever your details change.
