What is a .name domain name?

A .name domain is a domain extension reserved for individuals rather than companies. It suits personal portfolios, freelance profiles, resumes and family sites. Registration is limited to your own name, so it is one of the few extensions a business cannot use.

.name domain FAQ

Who can register a .name domain?

Only an individual can register a .name domain, which makes it the one generic extension a company cannot hold in its own right. You register your own name, a parent may register a name on behalf of their child, and a fictional character is permitted only where you own the trademark.

Registrations that do not match a real person can be challenged after the fact, so the name on the address should be one you can stand behind.

Can my business use a .name domain?

No, a business cannot register a .name domain for itself, because the registry limits the extension to private individuals. A founder, consultant or freelancer can register their personal name and point it at the work they want to show.

For a company address, a descriptive ending such as .business or .software carries no equivalent restriction.

Can I still register a two-part address like john.smith.name?

No, third-level .name registrations are being withdrawn, after Verisign asked ICANN to remove the service in April 2026 and the request was approved that July. New registrations use the single form, such as johnsmith.name.

Older guides still describe the two-part format, which is why it remains one of the most common misunderstandings about this extension.

Does a .name domain still come with email forwarding from the registry?

No, the registry email forwarding that .name was known for has been withdrawn under the same set of 2026 policy changes. A custom mailbox on a .name domain now works the way it does on any other extension.

Two further registry services, defensive registrations and NameWatch, were removed in 2026 as well.

How does a .name domain compare with .me for a personal site?

A .name domain states that the address belongs to a person, while .me is an unrestricted country code extension that a company can register too. .me is the more familiar of the two and .name is the more literal.

The decision usually comes down to one question: does an exact match to your own name matter more than wider recognition?

Do I need to prove my identity to register a .name domain?

No identity document is requested at the point of registration, although the eligibility rule still applies afterwards. A registration that does not correspond to a real individual can be disputed later.

What happens if the exact version of my name is taken?

When your exact name is already registered, the .name rules allow you to add numbers, so johnsmith.name can become john5smith.name. Appending unrelated words is not the pattern this extension was designed around.

Can I use a .name domain for a pen name or stage name?

A .name domain is meant for your own name, and the registry allows a fictional or assumed name only where you hold trademark rights in it. A working stage name with no mark behind it sits outside the intended use.

Registrations that do not correspond to a real individual can be challenged after the fact.

Are the WHOIS lookup services for .name changing?

Yes, Verisign asked ICANN to remove the summary, detailed and extensive WHOIS services for .name in April 2026, and the request was approved that July. Ordinary registration data lookups continue to work.
