Starting your own website? Great! Wix has hundreds of beautiful templates for you to choose from. Want to be 100% authentic? No problem, a Wix template is fully customizable. In fact, you can change so many elements in a Wix website design, it would basically be impossible to find the original template it was made from.
In this post we’ll show you how to completely transform a template in 3 easy steps. Before we get started choose a template you want to make your own. On the Wix Create page, select a template you like. Each category contains many different layouts and designs to choose from.
We chose this beautiful template, now let’s get started:
1. Change Background and Colors
You can switch different backgrounds and colors until you get the appearance you like. On the left toolbar, click the “Design” icon and then click background. You’ll get a large selection of backgrounds to choose from. Select a pattern or a solid background and click to change. You can also upload your own image for a background.
You can also change the site’s look and feel when you choose a color palette. Each Wix template has several color palettes available. These palettes were selected by Wix designers as optional color combinations. When you select a palette, note that several elements such as the site background, the menus and the fonts, will change color.
Customizing the color palette gives your website a whole new look with just one click. Here are 4 examples of how different your site can be just by changing the background and the color palette.
2. Choose Your Style of Font
The next thing to do is to change the font you use. The Wix editor provides you with a selection of different font schemes. Under “Design”, click “Fonts”. Note that once you choose a scheme, it will change the text everywhere, including the page header and body as well as menu buttons.
You can also change the font of a particular text element by clicking “Customize Font” and selecting from the drop down menu. If you play around with the fonts of the header and body, just make sure your site has an H1 and other important SEO tags. To find out more on SEO and tags visit our Learning Center.

3. Change Style of the Navigation Menu, Add Pages and Images
On any Wix site you can also change the style of the menus. Click on the menu itself, then click “Change Style”, and give your menu another look.
Similarly, you can change the style of a page. On the left toolbar, click the “Pages” icon, then click on the settings wheel next to the page. At the bottom of the settings menu you’ll see a “Change Style” icon. Click it and then apply one of the designs available.
To further personalize the design, click “Edit Style”. Here, you can customize some of the settings of the element like the color border or background.
Does your site need more pages? Fewer pages? You can change the status of pages by clicking on the “Pages” icon. This is the place for all things related to the management of your website pages (including adding, removing and duplicating pages). Here you can also manage your site’s SEO for each page separately.
Now it’s time to truly make the site your own by placing your content. Your story told in text and images is the final distinguishing factor that makes a site truly original. Find out more about modifying or adding an image gallery and give it an extra sparkle.
That’s it! Get your text and images in place and tell the world all about who you are.
