If you plan to run a blog or sell products, ensure the platform supports the features you need, like SEO settings, categories, product variations and online payment processing . Scalability: Think about growth. Can the platform support multiple pages, additional sites or higher traffic? UK pricing and support: Transparent pricing matters. Look for plans that fit your budget and include customer support suitable for UK users. Check whether pricing is billed monthly or annually and whether local support channels are available. Choose a format First, decide how you’ll present your work. A digital portfolio, like a website, is the most popular choice. It’s versatile, easy to share with a link before an interview and can be viewed from anywhere. This is a must-have for remote interviews or creative fields where you want to show off your digital projects. You could also create a presentation deck. You can save it as a PDF and send it over, or present it live during a video call. For in-person interviews, a physical binder with high-quality prints can leave a lasting impression, especially in more traditional industries. Pro tip: If you're stuck on where to start, exploring these sample portfolio websites can spark plenty of ideas. 02. Select your best work This is your chance to shine, so think quality over quantity. Pick 3–5 projects that really show off your skills and are relevant to the job you want. The goal is to prove you're the right person for this role, not just list what you did in your last one. For each project, tell a story using the STAR method: Situation: What was the challenge? Task: What was your goal? Action: What steps did you take to reach it? Result: What was the outcome? Use numbers like sales figures or engagement metrics to show your impact. To make your portfolio even more compelling, add a short bio and share what you hope to achieve in the next few years. You can also include a visual timeline of your career, along with any certifications, awards or great feedback from past managers. Explore these portfolio name ideas . 03. Pick a domain and website host If you choose a digital format, you need a place for it to live online. Your domain name is your address on the internet. It should be professional and easy to remember. Using your full name is usually the best choice. Use a domain name search tool to check availability, or try a domain name generator for creative ideas if your first choice isn’t available. Once you have a name in mind, you need a website host. Hosting ensures your site is visible on the web. Some website builders even include free website hosting , which simplifies the process. Secure a domain that looks clean and credible to recruiters. 04. Choose a website builder and template You don't need to be a designer to learn how to open a website . Wix gives you the tools to make a portfolio website, fast. You can choose from 2,000+ website design templates designed specifically for portfolios, saving you hours of work. Pick a template that is clean, professional and puts your work front and center. Check out Wix's templates: Resume website templates Portfolio website templates Personal website templates Discover the best portfolio website builders to get started on your journey. 05. Build a narrative Your portfolio should tell a story. Look at the job description and pick work samples that show you have the skills the employer is looking for. You want them to see you as the perfect person for the job. For each sample, walk them through your creative process. Don't just show the final product. Explain the "why" and "how" behind your work. For an extra touch, consider adding a 30-60-90 day plan. This is where you can outline your goals and how you'll contribute during your first three months. Expert tip from Doreen Weissfelner, head of Wix analytics and home: “Your portfolio is your chance to direct the narrative. Decide what story you want to tell and build everything else around that.” 06. Make yourself easy to contact Recruiters need a clear way to reach you. Include a dedicated contact page or place your details in the footer of every page. Include your professional email address and a link to your LinkedIn profile. You might also consider adding a contact form. This protects your email address from spam while giving visitors a direct line to your inbox. Make sure every link works and leads exactly where it should. If you use scheduling software for calls, embed that link directly on your contact page. 07. Review your interview portfolio Before you send your link or print your pages, double-check everything. A manageable interview portfolio is typically 5–10 pages or 10–12 slides. If it's too long, the interviewer might lose interest. Test functionality on different devices and check all digital links. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly too, as most people browse on their phones. A good website builder with built-in SEO features can handle much of this for you, while also improving your website performance to keep visitors engaged. If using a physical portfolio, use high-quality copies rather than originals. You may want to leave it with the interviewer, and you won't want to lose your only copy. 08. Keep your interview portfolio updated Your career is always growing and your portfolio should grow with it. Make it a habit to update your site or portfolio every few months. Add your latest projects, new skills or recent wins. It’s easier to do it little by little than all at once. Keeping your portfolio fresh means you’re always ready for new opportunities. Plus, it’s a great way to see how much you’ve grown over time. Think of it as a work in progress, not something you finish and forget about. What to include in an interview portfolio Your portfolio should show off both your personality and your professional achievements. Make sure to include these sections to give interviewers a full picture of what you bring to the table. Introduction Start with a short bio about who you are and your career goals. Explain what makes you a great fit for the role or industry you're applying for. Resume Add an updated resume that’s tailored to the job. It should be the same one you sent in with your application so your interviewer can easily follow along. Professional summary/timeline A visual timeline of your education, training and career path is a great way to show your journey. It’s much easier to scan than a long paragraph and helps the interviewer quickly grasp your experience. Work samples/case studies This is where you let your work shine. For each project, describe your role, the problem you solved, the skills you applied and the outcome. Use numbers and data to show the impact you made. Skills and accomplishments Show off your skills, like leadership or writing, with real examples. Include copies of any licenses, certifications, awards or positive reviews you’ve received. References/recommendations Add letters of recommendation or testimonials from past employers or clients. You can also include a list of professional references with their contact information. Closing page End with a concluding thought. It's also a good idea to list a few questions for the interviewer to show you’re engaged and curious about the role. - How one artist transformed his online portfolio into a vibrant community
While Nedavius was always an artist, doodling, sketching and painting, he never knew that his art could be a pursuable career until he cultivated his presence with an online portfolio. He curated even the smallest details of his art portfolio and online presence in line with his brand identity, a 3D-style inspired by the softer side of hip hop synonymous with the music of the 2010s. Muted colors, rounded edges and his distinct cartoon style breathes life into each of his creations, while also impressively showcasing his skills. He quickly found that he could use his portfolio to guide his viewers in the exact way he wanted them to interact or interpret his art. But as the online world continues to evolve, Nedavius has found that in learning how to build a website , he did more than just showcase his work. It has gradually and organically grown a new community centered around art and music. It started when he wanted to tell more of the story behind his work on social media, so he wrote in-depth blog posts to accompany the posts, leading users back to his website to discover more of his work. “Social media can die out at any time. A website is there to stay,” Nedavius says. “I wanted my own way to show my work in case anything else fails. A website gives more of a look into you than social media and can be an experience that people want to go back to.” We sat down with Wix user and digital artist Nedavius to pick his brain on his journey to success through digital mediums and how he’s continuing to grow his business while staying true to his artistic sensibilities: Tip: If you’re looking to create a portfolio website (regardless of actual website type , from model portfolio to photography and everything in between) to showcase your work, add personal touches to your site that aligns with your brand identity. For example, Nedavius used his 3D animations as site icons on his website. Also check our these portfolio examples and our animation portfolio guide for further inspiration. Nedavius's experiential website Wix: Describe your journey Nedavius: I’m a digital artist based in New York. Since 2016 I’ve been sharing my art online, starting out with illustrations of my friends and favorite artists, then Photoshop collages of music album covers and eventually diving into 3D illustration and animation at the start of 2020. What motivates you? I’m motivated by the act of inspiring people, and the fact that the future is an open book—and through art, design, we can build the stories and write the future. Where do you see yourself in the future? How do you see your personal brand evolving? I see myself expanding my creativity into more areas—animated films, toys, apparel, community events and more unimagined places. What or who inspires you? And where do you look for inspiration? Music is where I find my biggest inspiration. Whether it's the stories told through music, the feelings it evokes or the connection to a time, place, event, or person that it holds. I’ve always transmuted those aspects through visual form. Outside of music, I look for inspiration in everyday life. How do you generate new ideas? By digesting a lot of different art, whether through social media, online archives, movies/shows from the past and especially books more recently. I think the more you take in, the more possibilities you’re aware of and the more unanswered questions or unexplored areas you can create from. How do you measure success? Success to me is a combination of the freedom to be yourself and impacting others through that—living through creation and inspiration, not just survival. What design are you most proud of? So far, my website—specifically the nedavius.com/process site [a digital installation that takes users through an interactive experience of creating a website with Wix.] Initially it was just a thesis project for graduation, but it has impacted many people beyond that. It’s motivating to me and gets me excited to keep developing it more. What is the best career advice you’ve been given? The importance of patience and consistency, focusing on enjoying the journey and loving that more than whatever you think the end goal is. What has been your biggest challenge since you started? One of my biggest challenges has been staying away from burnout. It’s easy to get excited over ideas, say yes to everything and want to execute it all at once. With how fast-paced the world is today, it’s a challenge to practice patience and balance to create something timeless. What advice would you give to a new creator? “Don’t think, just make. Early on, thinking can easily turn into overthinking and then stagnation. Create and move forward always, no matter how small the steps.” For cover art specifically, can you share your process? How does the sound of the music spark creativity? The process is really a conversation between the music and/or the artist. A lot of times the artists have an idea of what their music ‘looks’ like to them. I just carve the details to life. When I hear the music I try to take the tone, the feelings and the lyrics in to transmute them visually. How do you feel 3D design and movement are changing the design world? I think it's changing the design world in good and bad ways. When combined with technology, it’s allowed for more innovation; when combined with art, it lets us create more interactive and engaging worlds. And I love that as it grows, more learning resources are coming along with it, which allows even more innovation. But ideas like a totally digital, 3D metaverse are a bit scary. How have NFTs changed the way you approach digital art? It’s allowed for more freedom—as a digital artist specifically, in the past you were confined to a certain level of creativity or a certain set of pathways if you wanted to live off of your art. Where a painter can paint and sell the canvas in galleries, a digital artist would have to approach their art through some other commercialized means—turning it into a t-shirt, a poster, stickers, etc.—which oftentimes can devalue the art itself. Although the world mostly sees commercialized NFTs as huge projects where art comes second to profit, the scope of NFTs has opened up a huge window of opportunity for digital artists to create more freely, live off of their creativity and build more community around their art. How to create an animation portfolio in 8 steps Define your purpose Select your best work Pick a domain and website host Choose a website builder and template Showcase your animation work Introduce yourself Start an online shop (optional) Keep your animation portfolio updated 01. Define your purpose Before you start building your animation portfolio and learning how to open a website , you need to research your target employers and projects. What kind of animation style, genre and tone are they looking for? What are their expectations and preferences? How can you align your portfolio with their vision and goals? Getting to know your audience enables you to craft a portfolio that resonates with their needs and interests, boosting your visibility. 02. Select your best work While it may be tempting to include all your work in your professional portfolio , remember that quality is more important than quantity. Focus on what makes you unique and choose your best work that shows a variety of skills and styles. If you can’t decide which clips show your best quality work, make a shortlist and show it to a colleague or mentor who can give you an expert and/or non-biased opinion. Keep these tips in mind as you select your works: Avoid fanart in your portfolio: Fanart can be seen as a way to showcase your admiration for your favorite franchises, but it's not recommended to include in your portfolio. Potential employers or clients are more interested in seeing original content that demonstrates your personal style and creative thinking. Save fanart for social media platforms or personal websites. Look at other animation portfolios for inspiration: If you're struggling with ideas on how to showcase your work, take a look at other animation portfolios online. This can give you an idea of what works well and what doesn't, as well as inspire you to think outside the box in terms of presentation and website layout . 03. Pick a domain and website host Once you have selected your best work, it's time to choose a domain name and website host. A custom domain gives your portfolio a professional touch and makes it easier for potential clients or employers to find you online. Here’s a simple guide on how to pick a good domain name: Keep it short and easy to remember Avoid numbers or special characters Use your name or company name Utilize keywords related to animation Perform a domain search to check for availability For inspiration, use a domain name creator Learn more about what is a domain name and get started with Wix’s free web hosting . Ensure your website is easily accessible to potential employers or clients as difficulty in accessing your site means they might quickly move on. Choose a hosting website that excels in supporting animation-heavy sites — speed and capacity for larger files are key. While there are numerous hosting options, such as Wix, aim for one that offers an ad-free environment. Consider your online portfolio as your personal web space, a spot where you stand out without competitors' distractions. Your animation portfolio, therefore, should be a clean showcase of your best work, free from any interruptions. 04. Choose a website builder and template Once you have your domain and hosting sorted, it's time to choose a website builder and portfolio layout . Your portfolio, like your website name, should be uniquely yours so look for a website generator that offers a high level of customization. Among the best website builders for portfolios , Wix is a popular choice for animators due to its user-friendly drag and drop builder and graphic and web website templates . When selecting a website builder, look for these features: Website template : A clean web design and carefully curated selection are key to showing off your talents. When selecting a template, look for one that fits your aesthetic and showcases your work in a visually appealing way. Customize the website template to make it unique to your personal brand. Navigation bar: Your website should have easy site navigation , with clear and concise menus that lead visitors to your work. Avoid cluttering your portfolio with too many categories or web pages , as this can make it overwhelming for viewers. Mobile-friendly design: With more and more people accessing websites through their smartphones, it's important to ensure that your animation portfolio is optimized for mobile viewing. You don't want potential employers or clients to miss out on your work because they can't view it correctly on their device. Learn more: What is web design? 05. Showcase your animation work Your animation portfolio should visually stop a viewer in their tracks. If your animation portfolio isn’t eye-catching enough, a client or studio will simply move on to other options. Use these tips to create a visual impression that sums up your animation style. Open with your showreel: Your showreel should be one of the first things people see when visiting your homepage . A showreel is the best way to showcase a variety of work and skills in a condensed format. You want to ensure that you have more than one style of animation in the demo reel to showcase in your animation portfolio. Organize your work effectively: When organizing your work, consider grouping similar pieces together to create a cohesive flow. Creating collections of storyboards, 2D animation, motion graphics and 3D work will help clients select what they want to see. This also allows potential employers to see your range of skills and versatility. Use high-quality renderings: For 3D animations, it's important to use high-quality renderings to showcase your work. Opt for high-resolution, well-lit and detailed renderings to highlight your skills. Details like texture, light reflection and shadows not only bring your animations to life but also add depth and realism, captivating viewers and making a memorable impact. Poor quality or grainy images can take away from the overall impact of your animation. Aim for crisp and clear images that accurately represent your work. Wixel offers an image resizer tool to help you make sure your images always look their absolute best. Provide context for each piece: While your animations should speak for themselves, providing context can help viewers understand the purpose or concept behind each piece. This can also give insight into your creative process, problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Include a brief description or explanation for each animation, highlighting key elements and techniques used. Most clients won’t be animation experts, so keep the technical jargon to a minimum. This can also be a great opportunity to showcase your storytelling abilities by giving a background on the characters or world within the animation. Avoid using flash: Flash isn't supported on many mobile devices, which means your portfolio might not be viewable on a phone, potentially missing out on opportunities. Using Flash may indicate that you are not up on current trends — and employers may suspect that you do not know how to use HTML5, even if you do. 06. Introduce yourself Your animation portfolio should also include an About Me page for your personal brand and bio. This is an opportunity to display your unique personality and interests, as well as any relevant experience or achievements. It’s also important to include contact details like an email address so that anyone who comes across your portfolio online knows how to contact you. Consider including a professional profile photo and links to your social media accounts or other online platforms where you post your work. This can help potential employers or clients get a better sense of who you are and your style as an animator. 07. Start an online shop (optional) If you're interested in selling your animations online, consider adding an online store made with an online store creator or customizing eCommerce website templates to your portfolio. When you learn how to build an eCommerce site , it not only opens up a new revenue stream but also meets the expectations of modern consumers who value the ease and accessibility of shopping from home. When creating your shop, make sure to: Write product descriptions: For each piece, include a thorough description with the title, medium, size and any other relevant details. You can also write background knowledge or stories behind the creation of each piece. Set up secure payment options: Select a platform that offers secure online payment options so you can accept payments on the go . This will ensure the safety of both you and your customers' data. Offer shipping and handling information: Be transparent about your shipping and handling process, including estimated delivery times and any additional fees or policies. This will help manage customer expectations and avoid any misunderstandings. Tip : You can also start a print-on-demand business to help you make money as an artist . If you’re new to eCommerce websites , check our guides on what is eCommerce and eCommerce website costs . 08. Keep your animation portfolio updated Just like with any creative field, it’s important to keep your animation portfolio updated. This will not only allow you to feature your latest work but also show potential employers or clients that you are constantly improving and staying on top of industry trends. Keeping your animation portfolio up-to-date isn't just about adding new work—it's also about refining and improving what's already there. By regularly updating your portfolio, you can make sure it always represents you at your best. Use the following tips: Keep your portfolio fresh : Continually add your new animations to showcase your most impressive work. Let viewers discover your evolving skills and the latest highlights of your animation journey. Remove outdated pieces : As you continue to grow as an animator, you may find that some of your old pieces no longer reflect your current skills and style. It’s important to regularly review and remove these outdated pieces from your portfolio to maintain a cohesive and impressive showcase of your work. Refresh descriptions : As your understanding of a project deepens, it's key to update your descriptions to mirror your current insights accurately. This ensures they truly represent your efforts and thinking. Consider adding fresh insights or stories for a fuller picture of your work. Update contact information : Make sure all your contact details are up-to-date, including any new social media accounts or websites you want to share. This will make it easier for potential clients to reach out to you and stay connected. Get feedback : Ask for feedback from colleagues, mentors or other animators in your network. Their insights can help you identify areas for improvement and make your portfolio even stronger. Learn more: Animation portfolios How to start an animation business Why you should create an animation portfolio website While social networking platforms like Instagram, Pinterest and Behance are wonderful for exhibiting your work and communicating with an audience, you should still house your animations— whether you’re a working professional or have an animation student portfolio—on a website. Here are some key reasons why you need an online portfolio: Gives you artistic freedom An online art portfolio grants you control over how your work is presented. You can curate and organize your web content in a way that best represents your style. This allows you to feature the diversity of your talent, making it easier for visitors to see the full range of your abilities. Strategies to include diverse styles in an animation portfolio: Showcase versatility by including projects in different animation styles (2D, 3D, traditional, experimental, etc.). Experiment with various art styles, color palettes and animation techniques to showcase range. Include personal projects that explore different genres, moods or visual aesthetics. Demonstrate adaptability by showcasing projects that cater to different audiences or industries. Highlight any awards, recognition or industry exposure received for projects in diverse styles. Maintains an up-to-date presence Your portfolio can be accessed anytime, anywhere—meaning anyone who wants to see your talent can view it at their own convenience. Be sure to regularly update your site with new and improved content, keeping it fresh and relevant. Tips to organize and categorize animation projects in your portfolio: Create clear categories or tags to group similar projects together for easy navigation. Use filters or search functionality to allow viewers to browse projects based on specific criteria. Consider organizing projects chronologically, by theme, by technique or by client/type of work. Prioritize showcasing your best and most relevant projects at the forefront of your portfolio. Demonstrates your identity as an animator Your online portfolio is a representation of you as an animator. It not only showcases your work but also provides insight into your creative process, inspirations and overall artistic identity. By displaying your work and accompanying it with meaningful descriptions or stories, you can connect with viewers on a deeper level. This helps build your personal brand and establishes yourself as a professional in the animator world. How to incorporate storytelling elements in your animation portfolio: Use narrative descriptions to contextualize each animation project and engage viewers. Demonstrate storytelling skills through sequential art or storyboard examples. Showcase projects that convey emotion, conflict and resolution to demonstrate storytelling capabilities. Consider including personal projects or passion projects that showcase your unique storytelling style. Experiment with different storytelling formats such as short films, animated sequences or motion comics. School admission requirement If you're an aspiring animator looking to apply to schools, having an online portfolio is a prerequisite of the admission process. Schools want to see not only your technical skills, but also your creativity and ability to effectively present your work. An online portfolio is an excellent way to showcase all these elements in one place, making it easier for admissions officers to evaluate your potential as an animator. Guidelines for showcasing your animation process in a portfolio: Include sketches, storyboards and concept art to demonstrate the creative process. Highlight key stages of animation production such as character design, animation and post-production. Showcase both completed projects and works in progress to demonstrate growth and skill development. Use captions or annotations to provide context and insights into each project. Consider creating a dedicated section or page on your portfolio specifically to showcase your animation process. What to look for when choosing an interior design website builder Choosing the right website builder for your business comes down to your specific needs. Look for builders with excellent gallery options, high-resolution image support and layouts that make your projects look their best. Get inspired by these sample portfolio websites . Ease of use: You're a designer, not a developer and so a builder with an intuitive interface, like a drag-and-drop editor, will let you focus on your website design rather than technical details. Customization: Your brand is unique and your website should be too. Choose a builder that gives you enough control over colors, fonts and layouts to create a site that truly reflects your style. Templates: A great starting point can save you a ton of time. Look for builders with a good selection of professionally designed templates for your business. Business tools: Think about what you need to run your business. Do you need a booking system for consultations? A blog to share your expertise? An online store to sell curated items? Make sure your chosen website builder supports these features. Price: Budgets always matter so compare the pricing plans and make sure you're getting the features you need for a price that works for your business.
