Assign custom User ID's at signup

Depending on the business type, at times we may need to assign unique user id's for persons that join our site. We need a way to be able to assign customer user ID's that can be used to identify the user, just as the email does. Allow the designer to determine if the ID is just made up of numbers, letters or both.
