Wix’s first-ever developer conference is less than two months away, and in the buildup to the two-day hybrid event, we’re excited to announce that we are hosting a remote-first hackathon for Wix developers around the world.
Contestants are encouraged to push the limits of their creativity, using Velo — Wix’s JavaScript platform for full-stack web development — to create their own games. While Velo was largely built with web development in mind, making it easy for even novice developers to create animations, connect to database collections, and install npm packages on their Wix sites, we’re consistently amazed by the ways we’ve seen developers repurpose the technology to make fascinating projects of their own, including games. Velo isn’t intended to be a game platform, which adds to the complexity of this challenge. You’ll really need to use your creativity to build a game that works with the platform.
Independent developers like Max Bjork have been able to build elaborate creative writing contests entirely with Wix, Velo, and JavaScript, and we’ve even seen users recreate classic games like Space Invaders and Tic Tac Toe with the technology, finding novel ways to solve many of the same design challenges that early designers were faced with creating these games for the very first time.
First-place winners will receive a 5 thousand dollar cash prize, as well as two tickets to Wix DevCon on September 7-8. Over 30 thousand dollars will be awarded in total prizes, with unique awards for contestants that demonstrate the best use of Velo features, Most unique game, Most Valuable Feedback, and more.
The hackathon runs between July 5 and August 15, but contestants are welcome to sign up on a rolling basis — as long as they submit their apps to the judges by 5pm EDT on August 15. For more information about the hackathon or to sign up to participate, please visit wixdevcon.devpost.com.
