Create an element who is fixed when scrolling

Hey,

I am creating a blog page with the categories on the left side. I would like the categories to start at a point x on the page. Once the reader scroll down the category box would still show on the page. Has anyone done it already?

Unfortunately not and all the coding I tried didn't work. It didn't recognized it. Do you know what is the JS code I could use?
