Pointing vs. Name Servers Domain Connection Methods

If you have a custom domain business email (e.g., sales@mydomain.com), your domain's DNS must include your email provider's records (e.g., MX, A, CNAME, TXT records).

When you connect via name servers, make sure your email provider's required DNS records are added in your Wix account.

Wix automatically adds your domain's existing MX records when you connect via name servers. However, some email providers require you to add additional records (such as CNAME or TXT records). In these cases, you'll need to add the DNS records manually in your Wix account. 

Note: 

Microsoft Office 365 business emails (which are offered by GoDaddy and some other domain hosts) require you to add several custom DNS records with your DNS host. If your domain has working Office 365 business emails, you can avoid re-adding DNS records in your Wix account if you connect by pointing. 

If you have existing DNS records you'd like to continue using, you'll need to add them in Wix when you connect via name servers. Subdomains and verification records are examples of services that need DNS records to work.

When connecting via pointing, you don't change any of the DNS records that affect your domain's business emails. 

Consider pointing if you want to avoid having to add your email provider's DNS records in your Wix account. 

When connecting via pointing, you're only changing the DNS records used to display your website. Other services that depend on DNS such as email, subdomains, and verification records remain unchanged. 

Consider pointing if you have many DNS dependent services you'd prefer to not have to reconfigure.

It can take up to 48 hours for the domain connect to complete. 

The difference between connecting via pointing or name servers is difference in who manages your DNS.

If you connect your domain via nameservers, you manage your DNS records from your Wix account. If you choose to connect your domain via pointing, you continue to manage your DNS records at your domain host.
