My name is Slash Coleman and I produce and perform personal stories on stage and television and write books. I perform mostly on the National Storytelling Festival Circuit, a little known folk subculture that takes me all over America (and internationally too) and we’re now at work on my second PBS Special about the re-birth of storytelling in America. I perform personal stories about what it was like growing up in Richmond, VA – raised by 8 artists who were all from different countries.
I’ve been using Wix for about 5 years. My family owns a gift shop and furniture store and I was embarrassed that they had no web presence. I wanted a website builder that didn’t require bulky software and one that I could easily teach my family to use so they could update their business website themselves.
When I found Wix, it was like a huge, deep breath – extremely easy, intuitive, fun, colorful, and really user-friendly. I built their site for them and handed over the keys. My aunt, who is very picky, was really pleased. I felt like a website building rockstar! In my spare time I also consult with artists and since building that first website I’ve turned on hundreds of artists to Wix. It excites me when a person who knows nothing about web design or computer stuff builds their own website. It’s really empowering for them and it’s really rewarding for me.
Four years ago I wrote a book called “From Starving to Thriving: The Art of Business for Creatives,” which coincided with my class for artists being featured on the NPR series “How Artists Make Money.” I couldn’t find a publisher who was interested in taking a chance on publishing a business book for artists, so I came up with the idea of taking 12 chapters of the book to create 12 different shows for artists – each on a different art marketing topic. The result is “Slash Wednesday.” It’s like David Letterman meets Chuck Norris meets a marketing workshop for artists. It runs every first Wednesday of the month in NYC at under St. Mark’s Theater from noon – 1pm and on our Livestream channel for those outside the NYC area. All the info can be found on my Wix website.
I feel Wix allows me to tell my personal story without getting in the way. Now that I can build my site using HTML5, it’s even better. With all the social media features, the photo imports, cool framing options, SEO options, the ability to blog, connect to my social media community, I really feel as an artist, Wix is an essential part of my creative arsenal.
