In October 2011, I used Wix to create dearlisarudgers.com, an interactive cover letter targeted at Lisa Rudgers, Vice President for Global Communications at the University of Michigan, in an effort to be hired as the University’s first Social Media Director. I implemented a full-fledged social media campaign centered around the site, driving over 25,000 unique visitors from 83 countries around the world. My campaign was picked up by several local news outlets, including AnnArbor.com, The Detroit News, and Fox 2 Detroit.
Although I heard from Lisa Rudgers and the University about interviewing for the position within 12 hours of launching the site, I was not asked to come back for a second interview. The University has since filled the position, and I was offered an even better opportunity as the Social Media Director at Ingenex Digital Marketing.
I heard about Wix in a graphic design course I took in 2010 in my last semester at the University of Michigan. A fellow classmate brought it to our attention–he’d been using it to host his graphic design portfolio. I started using Wix to do the same, and have since used it to create several other sites, including dearlisarudgers.com.
Wix is a great tool for aesthetically-minded folks with minimal programming experience to get crisp, clean sites up quickly. I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to accomplish with dearlisarudgers.com, including the seamless integration of the video on the site’s landing page, which was vital to the success of my campaign–and I had only a weekend to do it. As a graphic designer with very limited coding skills, Wix was the absolute best way for me to create a visually striking site with the functionality I needed very, very quickly.
Wix is also incredibly well-optimized for search–another crucial component to the success my campaign saw in such a short time-frame. Wix makes it incredibly easy for users who aren’t super familiar with best SEO practices to still optimize their site well. Usually it takes at least a month to see a new site get a top result on Google – I was seeing first-page Google results by day three, thanks to the immediately high volume of traffic to the site, the backlinks I acquired from press features and fans, and the keyword optimization made easy by Wix. dearlisarudgers.com is now the very first Google result for “Lisa Rudgers” (sorry, Lisa!) and is a first-page result for “University of Michigan Social Media.”
