Retro Logo Design Tips
Know Your Style
Creating a retro or vintage logo is a great idea if you’re looking to evoke from your audience a feeling of nostalgia. Key examples of types of businesses that have used this style are barbershops, old-style restaurants, cover bands and old-school coffee shops.
Play with Typography
Fonts are one of the most important elements when creating a retro logo design. If you look at brands from any particular time period you will notice that they all use a specific type of font. Once you’ve decided on the period you’re looking to emulate, research logos from that time and find one that’s similar.
Keep Colors Basic
Full color printing is a relatively modern invention. So, if you’re looking to recreate a feeling of nostalgia or heritage from your logo, go with a two-tone color scheme. But colors aren’t completely out. If you want to bring to life the 1950’s and 1960’s, you can go for a few more vibrant colors, 2 - 3 max.
Make it Memorable
Logos from yesteryear relied on simple and strong imagery to convey the type of business they were. That’s why you’ll see many images of factories, tractors and tools. By contrast, modern logos tend to go for abstract symbols and icons to give a sense of the world they live in today. So if you're going for an old-school vibe, use something simple that relates to your industry—like scissors for a barbershop.
