3 of our Kyiv team members who recently moved into new roles, told us why they looked for their next challenge and how Wix helped them do it
Feeling fulfillment at work can come in many different shapes and forms. Career paths are less hierarchical and rigid than they used to be, and encouraging employees to move into different roles within the company is a great way for them to challenge themselves, find their next passion or just refresh and re-shuffle.
“Basically, we want our employees to know that if they’ve done great work at their current role and they feel that they’re ready for their next challenge, we want their next career stop to be within Wix as well. We’re thinking about our employees, we see their personal needs and we care about them and want to present them with the right growth opportunities for them”, says Yael Kaminsky, from Wix’s people team.
Recently we spoke with 3 of our team members in Ukraine who moved into new positions at Wix after feeling that they wanted to switch into different roles while staying with us: Evgeny Krasik joined Wix Kyiv in September 2016 as our first Backend Developer on Payments by Wix. In July 2018, he moved to the Funnel team, and in March 2021, he moved to our Infra team.
Anna Yavtushenko started at Wix in December 2017 as a Customer Solutions Expert, her "first real job." She helped users with various issues, particularly enjoying the Wix Editor questions. “Amazed by the Editor's possibilities, I kept up with new features and enjoyed solving complex issues. It felt like solving a puzzle, ending in user gratitude,” she says.
Why did you want to move to a new role?
Evgeny: “Although I enjoyed working with very talented people, after a few years I missed a more hands-on approach. I was always interested in working in an Infra team as it's a different experience to working in a product team, and the Infra team had an available opening. For me, it was an opportunity to work on infrastructure that the whole company will use, which is quite exciting”.
Oleksii: “I understood that I could bring more value as a developer in the Infra team and also wanted to do what I do best - programming”.
Anna: “I was working in the same room with my current teammates and after I saw some aspects of their daily work, I realized that this is what I would like to do too. Later, when I had a meeting with HR and discussed what aspects of my work I enjoyed the most and what else I would like to try at Wix, I was offered to take the assignment for the Templates QA position. And now I’m here”.
Why was it important for you to make this career move at Wix?
Evgeny: “Well, Wix is awesome. I get to work with very smart people, in a good atmosphere and with no assholes. Apart from that, I feel that my decisions matter, and that I have the ability to make an impact. The managers in the team I was moving from and in the team I was moving to were very supportive of my decision. Basically, they made me feel that it was my decision and that they're behind me no matter what I choose to do. My direct manager was super supportive. He gave me a ton of options to choose from and made it clear that the most important thing for him was that I'll be happy with what I do. Quite an amazing manager, really”.
Oleksii: “I got good friends here, and there are a lot of challenges, so it was natural to make this move within Wix. Wix is my second home, so it’s like giving back to the community that raised you”.
Anna: “What I like about Wix is that here you can realize your potential to the fullest. The company is interested in the growth of its employees and supports them at each step. I like that it’s dynamic and that you will never get bored or feel that you are stuck in a routine. You always have to learn something new, take part in different projects and take on new challenges”.
In your opinion - what are the advantages of hiring people from within Wix?
Evgeny: “You get someone who already knows most of how stuff works in the company. It can be a great boost to a new team to get an experienced Wix team member who has his connections in the company, knows how to talk to them and how to get things done”.
Oleksii: “Developers at Wix know some internal issues better than anyone else, and since infrastructure teams are fixing these problems, it’s natural to find someone from the inside for such stuff”.
Anna: “I think the main advantage for the company is that these people already share our core values. It’s also easier to train them for the new positions since they already have some background knowledge”.
Do you have advice for Wix employees who want to grow but also to stay at Wix?
Anna: “In my opinion, Wix offers a lot of growth opportunities both vertically and horizontally. The company is interested in investing into their employees to turn them into even better specialists in their sphere. And it's a win-win situation both for the company and for the employees. That’s why I recommend everyone if they feel that there is an open position they would like to apply to, they should not be afraid to take this step. They should talk to their team lead/ HR to see if it’s possible to make this career move”.
Evgeny: “First, understand what you're trying to achieve by moving, and check if it can be achieved in your current team. For example, if you want to become a manager, it's easier (and faster) to do it in your current team where you've already established your authority and everyone knows what you're capable of. If what you're trying to achieve isn't achievable in your current team, moving to another team is a great way to refresh the domain you're working in”.
Oleksii: “There would never be a perfect time for a move, so if you feel that it would be better for you to do something new - just do it”.
