What We Think of Women’s Equality Day

Over the past century, women have gained more opportunity and access than ever before. Women have held positions as Head of State in over 50 countries and counting and are leading international organizations around the world. While we have not reached equality yet, on this Women’s Equality Day let us celebrate the women who are working and making it work – the women behind the Wix website builder.

We asked some of the incredible members of our global team how being a woman has affected their professional pursuits and what they hope to see in the future.

What We Think of Women’s Equality Day

Have you ever experienced inequality because you are a woman? What happened?

Sure! I majored in Physics, and that’s a field where the gender disparity is very big and my intelligence was questioned daily. In the beginning of my career I used to teach classes in a prestigious private school. Though my evaluations were consistently positive, I was never chosen to teach in the senior’s class (which included higher pay among other things.) At first I thought that it was due to my lack of experience until a male colleague with my exact same professional and educational background was hired to teach the senior classes. I was clearly disappointed so the coordinator called me in for a  meeting to explain that teaching the senior classes was very competitive, and I better fit the younger classes because I was ‘too maternal’ and furthermore for women to deal with the pressure of the senior classes they should need to be crazy or extremely attractive, and I wasn’t either. The coordinator was also a woman.

Have you ever experienced inequality because you are a woman? What happened?

Yes! I wanted to try out for a medic’s position in the Airborne Rescue and Evacuation Unit in the Army but the position was not open to women at the time. I fought the decision and did everything I could but was not allowed to try out because I was a woman.

What do you see as the biggest issue(s) preventing women from truly being equal?

Girls are not given the chance to fail and learn from it. In our industry it’s important to try and fail, that’s how you learn and that’s how you advance. This is a skill that young boys learn at a very early age but girls usually miss out on which limits them later on.

What do you see as the biggest issue(s) preventing women from truly being equal?

Early feminist education for all genders. I think the earlier you start the better, as it affects every aspect of people’s relationships throughout their lives – within their community, their family, friends, partners and themselves. The other thing is the amount of pressure placed on girls & women to do it all – that has to change and lastly – equal pay & equal rights.

How can women support one another in pushing for equality?

One of the biggest issues I’ve seen is that a lot of women-focused groups who are trying to overcome these issues leave men out of the conversation. Everyone needs to be involved in the conversation to fix any inequities. The other half of it is, supporting one another. Sinking up with other organizations that believe in the same mission is vital to our success. It’s important for all women to get involved and mentor one another.

How can women support one another in pushing for equality?
Many women still do not understand why it is important to speak up about equality and take more action. Some women take for granted the present state of things, especially in the western world, and don’t think that further improvement is necessary. We must speak up.

How can companies support women’s equality?

One of the main known reasons for the salary gap between men and women is simply – women ask for less. A lot of the women are not as confident in their abilities as men and have never been taught negotiation or are concerned to seem “bossy” or “pushy.” We also often think small and underestimate our abilities and contributions. We need consistent equal pay.

How can companies support women’s equality?

I think it would be good to have an anonymous way to report inequality that is monitored and addressed regularly.

What do you hope to see happen for women in the near future?

There are a number of things I hope to see change and most of them start with education. I hope to see girls learn about more female role models in a variety of fields throughout history and I hope this will inspire more women to pursue careers in male-dominated fields. Another pressing issue is our perspective on parenting roles. I hope to see the term “working mom” vanish from our societal vocabulary and instead see the term “working parent” coined for both genders.

What is the most important change you have seen for women in your lifetime?
There is a growing awareness in regards to women’s inequality, especially when it comes to sexual harassment and body image. People are less tolerant of the objectification of women. For example, many fashion companies started using “real” women and stopped using Photoshop in their magazines. This is a movement towards accepting that women come in different shapes and forms and each and every one of them is beautiful. A woman no longer has to be skinny, sexual, or submissive. She can be anything she wants. This translates into more than just body image on the runway, it affects women in every aspect of our lives.
