Wix Employees With Creative Second Careers

The Wix team is anything but dull; the people that make the Wix website building platform run smoothly every day are as varied as they come. And some team members don’t call it quits at the end of the work day – there are quite a few who have completely different second careers. Today we asked them to reveal what happens when they punch out, and then check in somewhere else.

One job for the rest of your life is so 1955. Here’s what some of our Wixies choose to do after hours:

Wix Employees With Creative Second Careers

Doron – Premium Customer Service Team Leader

What’s your 2nd career?
CrossFit Coach and owner of CrossFit Petah Tikva and CrossFit Bat Yam.

How did you get into it?
I lived in the United States after my military service and went to school there. I also competed in Track and Field as a sprinter. During my off season I was exposed to my first CrossFit workout and fell in love instantly.

What do you like about it?
The diversity in movements and workouts, the intensity and mostly the amazing community!

How do your two careers work together? Do they ever collide?
They work perfectly together. I use Wix.com to manage my entire online presence for both CrossFit boxes and I coach at nights after I’m done at the office.

What would your 3rd career be (if you could swing it)?
Return to being a professional athlete. That would however require about 48 hours a day :)

Yael – Community Manager & Blogger

What’s your 2nd career?
My partner and I lead workshops and larger community development projects using art to support disenfranchised communities. Most recently we did a creative mapping project with the Shapira Community Center.

How did you get into it?
Back when I lived in NYC I was a performance artist. I was introduced to a number of inspiring (and a few famous) artists who were doing meaningful community work. As I entered into the field of applied arts and education I was wildly inspired, much more so than when I was on stage. Over many years and a degree at NYU and Shenkar School of Engineering and Design, I was able to develop the skills to embark on projects of my own.

What do you like about it?
Nothing is more exciting to me than empowering individuals and creating real community. Art is a powerful tool for exploring sociological and anthropological issues from a different vantage point and also much more enjoyable than traditional dialogue facilitation.

How do your two careers work together? Do they ever collide?
I am newer to my career in high-tech than community development so it will be interesting to see. More than anything I look forward to understanding how to leverage offline community building into online engagement.

What would your 3rd career be (if you could swing it)?
My second home is my dance studio in Florentine, Tel Aviv. If I could I would make a career of it, but that might take away the fun. I was an actress once, I know the challenges of making your passion your career and I think I’d rather leave dance as a hobby.

Naama – Product Marketing Manager

What’s your 2nd career?
Im a dubbing actress. I’ve worked in this field for more than 15 years. I’ve dubbed TV cartoons, internet series and movies such as: Pokemon (Misty), SpongeBob SquarePants (Sandy Cheeks), Wizards of Waverly Place (Alex Rosu) and many many more.

How did you get into it?
When I was 9 years old I started playing in a theatre show in a private production. We toured  and one of my fellow actors happened to be a dubbing director. When I was 14 she contacted me saying I looked exactly like a character she was looking to cast. She invited me to audition for the cartoon show and I got the job! The rest is history.

What do you like about it?
Everything! I love the fact I can fool around with no limits, it’s very therapeutic. It’s a place I can be a kid again. I feel that I have something in common with every character I dub.

How do your two careers work together? Do they ever collide?
It works wonderfully together, I work during the day in the office and dub in the evening.

What would your 3rd career be (if you could swing it)?
Neuroscience researcher… :)

Roni – Wix Editor Product Manager

What’s your 2nd career?
I’m what you call a Music Curator. This includes DJing under the name Wannabeats, editing and presenting for Tel Aviv based KZ Radio, managing and editing music channels for digital streaming services, writing about music for Israel’s Walla! Culture online magazine and my blog Pop Lock… there’s more, but you get the point.

How did you get into it?
Music was always a huge part of my life, and since in Tel Aviv everyone’s a DJ, I got the chance to play a few gigs with a good friend who’s a hugely talented musician. I guess we must have been doing something right because that quickly got us scoring our own regular spot on a local college radio, and from there everything escalated to where I am today.

What do you like about it?
I love making the perfect mix. I enjoy putting a spotlight on great music and meeting people who say I’ve introduced them to a new band, song or sound they now love and listen to.  Most of all, I like the way these occupations require me to explore new sounds and trends, forcing me to constantly listen to more and more music, which is really all I ever wanted.

How do your two careers work together? Do they ever collide?
They actually work quite well together. Listening to music while working is perfect, and since musicians are generally at the forefront of digital and online evolution, keeping up to date with the music biz also means staying in touch with the web and where it’s going. The work ethics and habits you acquire from being a pro in one field are easily translatable to another and it always feels like my work in one pushes me forward in the other. Most of all, having this outlet for creativity and the pure fun it involves keeps me sane, pumped up and on top of my game in my “real” job as well.

What would your 3rd career be (if you could swing it)?
I think I would have loved to be an animator or a video artist of sort. I still got about 15 free minutes a day, so it’s not too late.

Roni

Benny – Support QA Engineer

What’s your 2nd career?
I’m a pilot.

How did you get into it?
It’s a childhood dream that I neglected during my teenage years. One day, when I was 28, I decided, why not?

What do you like about it?
It’s a lot of hard work that pays off when you end up with a safe and successful flight. Going up is always an adventure. From being limited with borders and boundaries, suddenly with a kilometer of a runway, you can go where ever you want to go, provided the weather conditions permit it.

How do your two careers work together? Do they ever collide?
Wix is great. I work with a great team and I have an awesome team leader. The head of my department is a cool guy as well. I think that people are fascinated about my being a pilot more than I am myself because it has become such a routine for me. Everyone is flexible and very supportive of my flying ambitions.

What would your 3rd career be (if you could swing it)?
Believe it or not, I only want to be a pilot. If I could survive without Wix, it would only be flying.

Benny B

Avi – QA Production Team

What’s your 2nd career?
I breed White Swiss Shepherds. Since I began breeding seriously about 5 years ago, dogs from my kennel have consistently won the best of breed at most club and all-breed shows, with many of my dogs have obtained various championship titles. I’m also studying to be a dog judge, which means that soon I’ll be able to judge in official dog shows

How did you get into it?
It started as a hobby; I bought my first dog and started to participate in dog shows. From there it became more serious and a lot goes into it before we even think of breeding any of our dogs. I actually started working at Wix because of my then hobby. One day, someone from Wix came to buy a dog and he saw my computer open, full of code. We talked and I told him I’ve always been into the website industry and coding. He invited me to interview and that was that.

What do you like about it?
I love to come back home, play with the dogs and take them for a long walk. It fills me with energy, especially when we have puppies. White Swiss Shepherds are so smart, they understand you like another person and their love is the most honest thing.

How do your two careers work together? Do they ever collide?
Wix is great on this front. We can bring our dogs to work and I’ve got a great team that can back me up when I need it. Raising a dog is similar to raising a child, so when unexpected things happen I usually  have to leave everything and attend to them. Luckily everyone at Wix is flexible and very supportive.

What would your 3rd career be (if you could swing it)?
These two careers take most of my time, so I don’t even have time to think about a third career.
