Guest of a Guest: July 2009 "Off The Eaten Path"
Simply put, Ziggy's is like Surf Lodge meets Cyril's Fish House but in Bridgehampton. Barely under a year old, this restaurant is most commonly known as the space where nightclub "Harbor Club" used to reside. However, the restaurant really should be known for so much more. Located a short drive off of Montauk highway, Ziggy Attias drew inspiration from California and surfing when it came to the restaurants design and menu. There are five flat screens that all show different surfing footage, surfboards are stationed around the restaurant, and a standing rack full of Surf and Island magazines are at your leisure to read. To add a creative touch, all of the tables are made of slate. Taking a trip down memory lane, you can draw doodles with Ziggy's chalk or play a game of tic-tac-toe while waiting for your food.
The large patio and outdoor seating area is the perfect place to enjoy a cold red stripe and some summer sun in addition to live music by the main beach Drummers Circle Band. Ziggy's may be a newcomer on the Hamptons restaurant scene yet would would never know that buy the looks of it. Ziggy Attias truly knows what he is doing when it comes to food service. In a time when society seems so unpredictable, Ziggy Attias has brought a restaurant to the Hamptons that is dependable and a guaranteed memorable time.
Dan's Papers: July 2009 "Ziggy's Surf Shack"
Whether you live in the Hamptons or you're lucky enough to come out here visiting, you know that once the summer hits it's all about being outside.
The good news is that, at Ziggy's, even if you're inside you feel like you're at the beach. Revisiting this clean, elegant yet casual restaurant with a very hip design, I was reminded of how they've managed to create an outdoor feeling: Lots of light, windows and high high ceilings, Lucite panels of beach grass, knee high fences, giant LED screens airing fantastic surfer videos. You feel like you never left the beach, except that you get to have fresh, light, food served to you, with not a grain of sand on it. In addition to that edge of the waves feeling inside, this season Ziggy's - a certified green restaurant - has added a beautifully landscaped outdoor seating area that will make you forget where you are.
Ziggy's offers food you can't get anywhere else - food that, as an ex-New Yorker who worked in the East Village, I really came to miss: freshly made falafel, hummus, babaganoush, as well as chicken, steak, shrimp and veggie kebabs served with fluffy herbed couscous with cranberries, chopped salad and warm, herbed pita. For my money, this is what Ziggy's does best.
The restaurant's offerings in this category are clean and fresh tasting - never stale or heavy.
The Mediterranean Eggplant appetizer was delicious. It included classic babaganoush, that creamy, smooth eggplant/tahini concoction, sautéed eggplant (chopped and sautéed in a fresh slightly sweet tomato sauce), olives and warm spinach pita bread. It's right on point. The Falafel Taster entrée ($17.95) could be had as a main course, but it's also great as a group appetizer. It's delicious - falafel, hummus, baba, warm pita, the perfect fix. The restaurant's hummus is so fine. If you think you've been getting good hummus by buying the stuff in the tubs in the dairy case - do yourself a favor and get reacquainted with the real thing.
But there are more offerings in addition to Mediterranean fare. Appetizers range from around $9 for chips and salsa to $17 for tasty, spicy, Peel and Eat Shrimp. When I've felt like making a more decadent choice, I've gone with the Island Coconut Shrimp - fried, served with mango chutney and delectable.
In addition to kebabs, entrées include New York Strip Steak and fries, fish and chips and pasta, ranging in price from $16 to $25. There are also the crowd pleasing Fat Boy Burgers 1/4 pound of Black Angus Beef; plus turkey or veggie burgers and pita sandwiches for lunch or dinner. There's a great selection of salads, from Greek to Caesar, served with or without grilled chicken or shrimp.
Desserts (all $6) include decadent concoctions with brownies and blondies, as well as cheesecake and vanilla pudding. The latter, served with whipped cream, chocolate sauce drizzled down the inside of the glass, and chocolate chips on top, did the trick.
With a full bar, Ziggy's offers good wines by the glass and bottle, a nice beer selection (including non-alcoholic) and fun summer cocktails. The Surf Shack also offers 2 for 1 margaritas all summer long.
A very kid friendly restaurant in the earlier dining hours, Ziggy's offers a full kids menu and an awesome playground in the back that's well cordoned off from the road and parking lot. Adults can sit and eat or have a drink watching the kids while waiting for dinner.
But later at night, Ziggy's transforms into a fun adult spot. The restaurant is ever evolving, trying new things on the menu and in the space. In addition to lunch and dinner, Ziggy's now offers brunch on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10 a.m., with every type of omelet plus pancakes, French toast, and breakfast burritos. On Mondays, starting around 9 p.m., there's a jam session. Stop by to play, or do as the tagline reads: Drop in. Chill out.

Dan's Papers: July 2008 "Ziggy's Bridgehampton"
There are two camps when it comes to new restaurants in the Hamptons. One groans, "Do we really need another restaurant?" The other delights, "Yay! A new restaurant." I'm of the second camp, so I was delighted to try out Ziggy's on the Bridge/Sag Turnpike.
First, it is one of the most beautiful, open, airy - dare I say "Hampton-y" - restaurants out here, designed by Steve Morris of Woodstock. You feel like you're sitting out at a surfer beach - albeit a very cool, clean, upscale one. The walls are light sky blue, low partitions feature a white fence on the bottom with beach grass seemingly preserved in opaque Plexiglass panels atop. The surfer theme is carried out with a gorgeous surfboard, sepia print '60s surfer photos, two large yet unobtrusive flat screens running outrageous surfer footage, and doorways and architectural shapes behind the bar that echo a surfboard shape, but in an aesthetically successful way.
Ziggy's offers great beachy drinks like the Montauk Mojito, Jolly Roger martini, Grapefruit Crocodile with Ruby Red Absolute - plus a selection of good, reasonably priced wines by the glass, and, thank you, a non-alcoholic beer.
The food at Ziggy's is very fresh and simple. We started with Coconut Shrimp with pineapple chutney - crunchy, greaseless, with a really fresh coconut-ty flavor. The Rippin' Peel + Eat Shrimp, boiled with Red Stripe beer and spices, was very nice and very spicy. Perfect for my taste. It is the most expensive thing on the menu, at $18.95. Ziggy is from Israel, and as one would hope, he nails the Falafel Taster. The ads are correct - it is the best falafel east of the East Village. The two types of hummus (spicy and mild) are smooth and delicious. The pita was grilled, the Israeli Salad with lemon juice and olive oil - fabulous. We also tried chicken and veggie kabobs. Again, fresh to the hilt, served with fluffy herbed couscous, that great salad or fries and grilled pita. A very nice lunch or light dinner, ranging in price from $13.95 for all veggie, to $16.95 for shrimp. Of course there are burgers, half-pounders served with fries, for just under $10.00, and pita sandwiches. For desserts, brownies and blondies with glazes and berries were delectable, as was the cheesecake.
One final, important note about Ziggy's. It's very rare to find a child-friendly restaurant that adults actually want to go to, let alone eat at. Typically, child friendly usually translates into a place that is so loud you don't hear children yelling, or so grimy that it doesn't matter what junior drops or spills anywhere. Ziggy's is child friendly for the right reasons - there's a playground in the back that rivals the best in town (and outdoor seating so you can keep an eyeball on the little ones); a kids menu; the flat screens; and an enormous lava lamp that I wish I owned. Not to mention, Ziggy's is the first certified green restaurant in the area - one nice detail was that, instead of reams of paper for use with crayons, the tables are honed slate from Brazil - horizontal chalkboards.
And when the night falls, after 9:00, and the kids are in bed, Ziggy's is a totally cool place for adults to have a light bite, a great drink, and still feel like they're outside, cost-averaging the high price tag of a Hamptons' beach rental or summer share.
Ziggy's is open for lunch and dinner daily, from 11 a.m. The kitchen closes at 10 p.m, but the music swings on until 2 a.m. They also feature live reggae every Sunday night at 10 p.m.
Southampton Press: January 2009 "Ziggy's Bridgehampton"
Ziggys Bar & Grill, which opened on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton last summer, is a surf-culture inspired casual restaurant that offers a family-friendly atmosphere and health conscious food.
This is the first restaurant venture for owners Ziggy and Stacey Attias, Ziggy worked as an artist in Manhattan for 11 years before moving to the East End to raise a family seven years ago.
I wanted to do a little falafel place, said Mr. Attias, who searched for years before he heard that the space that had formerly been the Azucar Moreno nightclub was available. He decided to expand his plans in order to make full use of the 150-seat restaurant.
I said we can do a concept place. Its kind of an island-y place, he said. Theres usually Bob Marley playing, parents are having frozen drinks and kids are running around.
Kids are welcome at Ziggys, which makes sense, since the proprietor and his wife, Stacey Attias, are currently raising three daughters.
The slate tables are specially designed so that kids can draw on them with chalk while waiting for a meal, and there is a jungle gym in the backyard of the restaurant, not far from the 10 outdoor tables available for summer use. On a recent evening, a few kids were in the center of the room transfixed by what Mr. Attias calls the largest lava lamp around. Several large television screens feature a variety of innovative surfing and snowboarding footage.
The large space is equally accommodating for adult crowds. Ziggys hosts live music on Thursdays in the summer and late night dancing most weekends.
The menu is inspired as much by Mr. Attiass Israeli roots as it is by beach culture.
A staple at the restaurant is the Fat Boy burger, which is served with french fries and an Israeli salad of chopped tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. For $11.95, visitors can choose a quarter-pound burger made with either beef or turkey. Veggie burgers are available for the same price.
Another regular entrée is Bobs Kabobs, two kabobs over a bed of herbed couscous with an Israeli salad, grilled pita bread and cucumber yogurt sauce.
Choices include the farm stand kabob, two skewers of seasoned vegetables for $15.95; chicken ($17.95); beef ($19.95); shrimp ($18.95); or any combination of the above for $19.95.
Ziggys also has stuffed pita sandwiches, which are served with cucumber yogurt or tahini sauce, an Israeli salad and french fries. Choices include falafel ($11.95); farm stand ($12.95); chicken ($13.95); beef ($14.95); and shrimp ($15.95).
The menu also includes a variety of salads, including the Hampton Field of Greens ($12.95), with local field greens, shaved red onion, bleu cheese, candied walnuts and seasoned pita croutons. The Golden Greek salad ($12.95) includes tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, peppers, olives and feta cheese, and the mozzarella and tomato salad includes fresh basil and olives ($14.95).
The appetizer menu at Ziggys is eclectic. Hummus and pita bread with olives is $9.95; Island coconut shrimp with mango chutney is available for $11.95; and Crispy Jammin calamari with creamy garlic aioli is available for $12.95.
Edamame, steamed soybeans in their pods with sea salt that are typically a staple at Japanese restaurants, is also available on the appetizer menu in two sizes, regular ($6.95) and grande ($11.95).
The colossal nachos, which include melted cheese, tomatoes, black olives, scallions, jalapeño peppers, sour cream and salsa verde, are $12.95. Black beans are available for $2 extra and ground beef for $3 extra.
Ziggys also has a kids menu, which includes either a cheeseburger, chicken kabob, chicken tenders, a grilled cheese pita or rigatoni for $7.95.
As an artist and filmmaker, Mr. Attias had some say in the look of the restaurant, which reflects the vision of Steve Morris, a designer who specializes in architectural metalwork and sculpture.
The light blue bar with stainless steel trim is highlighted by the frequent motif of beach grasses encased in resin, which gives the establishment a beachy-but-elegant feel. Vintage surfing photos adorn the walls and are interspersed with personal photos of Mr. Attias and his parents at the beach when he was a child.
Its modern, but we wanted to keep the beach atmosphere, he said. I was influenced by early surf culture. It has that 60s feel, with the lights and the globes and 60s images.
The restaurant also offers free wi-fi access and backgammon, chess and checkers. Right now, lunches are half price for the general public Monday through Friday and U.S. armed forces veterans are welcome to half-price lunches any time.
