Sandwell Young Carers started in 1994 by a man who was curious to know about how many carers there were in Sandwell and what support they were getting. He was shocked to discover that there were many and they weren't getting the right support they needed. So then he came up with the idea of Sandwell Young Carers - A place for young carers to have a short break from their caring responsibilities.Sandwell Young Carers were the first Young Carers group to own their own building in England. Since then Sandwell Young Carers keeps getting better and better with 'outstanding' reports of Ofsted inspectors. It has now got a waiting list of many people wanting to join. It is a registered charity set up to support young people between the age of 5-18, living in Sandwell, whose health, education and social lives have been affected as a result of caring for a dependent family member. The charity provided direct access to short-breaks and support to it's members in 2000. The dedication of it's highly trained work force has enabled it to raise just short of £3 million for young carers in Sandwell during the past 15 years. The provision has a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of young carers within it's board and staff team totalling 165 years. The service has been nominated by members and their families over the years recieving: the Sandwell MBC Early Years Award for outstanding practice & creativity for two consequtive years.Prior to that they recieved the Nationwide Voluntary Endeavour Awards bothregional & national.During our 2008 Ofsted inspection at our early years provision of the charity recieved 'Outstanding' in the following areas; helping children to be healthy, protecting children form harm or neglect and helping them stay safe, helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do, helping children make a positive contribution. The charity is one of the original services for young carers and it remains one of the head organisations in the country, with an annual turn over of £300k, boasting a team of 41 paid and volunteer workers, offering onsite & offsite services for the young carers inclusive of weekly youth & play groups, holiday schemes, study support & accreditations, workshops, regular group support and circle time, one to one support, offsite day trips and residential breaks, with transport provided where required.
