Master AliAkbar Moradi

Ali Akbar Moradi was born in 1957 in Guran, not far from Kermanshah, Iran. He was encouraged by his grandfather and father and started studying the tanbur at the age of seven. He was taught by Sayyed Hachem, Mirza Sayyed Ali Kafashyan, Sayyed Mahmod Alavi, Darvishi, Kaki Allah Morad Hamidi and Sayyed Vali Hosseyni with whom he learned not just his mastery of the instrument but also of Kurdish Maqam repertoire. He gave his first recital at the age of 14 in Kermanshah. One year later, in conjunction with two other musicians, Qademi and Elqassi, he founded the first tanbur group within the cultural department of the city. He began touring in Iran and his fame increased as of 1981 through his collaboration with singer Shahram Nazeri who he went on tour with to Europe, Canada and the United States. In 1991, he won first prize at the string instrument festival in Tehran. Starting in 1992, he did research on the ancient Maqams and recorded several cassettes and CDs. In 1998, he founded the Lavatch group consisting of twenty-six musicians of which three were his children Arash, Kourosh and Faranak Moradi and with whom he gave concerts and recorded with. He has toured and played in various worldwide festivals and highly acclaimed spaces throughout the years including; including; Roudaki Hall of Tehran, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Festival Hall (2005, 2000) of London, Carnegie Hall (2004) of New York with master kamancheh player, Kayhan Kalhor; Broadway Theater (2004, 1999) of New York with Pejman Hadadi; University of California at Irvine (2004), Rhythm Sticks Festival (2004) of London, and various praised halls in Iran. He has published numerous albums both solo and with accompaniment of music virtuosos. One of these publications The Ritual Maqam of the Yarsan is a compilation of the 72 Maqams of Yarsan and was completed by Mr. Moradi in order to preserve and promote cultural learning and tradition. Presently, Mr. Moradi is living in Iran where he instructs tanbur at his institute, Yarsan School of Music in Tehran. Kourosh Moradi

Kourosh Moradi was born in Guran, not far from Kermanshah, Iran in 1981. He started studying tanbur at the early age of three with his father, legendary tanbur master, Ali Akbar Moradi. He also studied daf with master Sufis of the Yarsan order and tombak with Master Hamid Moghadam. He toured the world with his father and other Kurdish and Persian master musicians such as Hossein Omoumi, Madjid Derakhshani and Pejman Hadadi. He has performed in highly acclaimed spaces including Roudaki Hall of Tehran, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and St. Johns Smith Square of London, Kings College of Cambridge, Pouya Cultural Center of Paris, Broadway Theater of New York, University of California at Irvine, and Chicago Town Hall. He has also played at numerous festivals worldwide including, XIII Cantigas do Maio of Portugal, Echoes from Eternity (2002), Intimations of Immortality with Robert Bly (2002) and Rhythm Sticks (2004) of London, World Music Festival (2004) of New York, Mehregan (2004) of Orange County, and World Festival of Sacred Music (2004) Los Angeles with Mamak Khadem. Kourosh Moradi taught in Tehran at the Yarsan School of Music for three years, he then moved to London for four years where he continued his instruction and in the interim taught for three months at the Pouya Cultural Center of Paris. Presently, he is living in Southern California where he teaches tanbur, daf and tombak in both Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
