CMSO Field Trip to Hamilton Southeastern Junior High School
CMSO made two job-site visits on October 1st, 2011. About twelve students and our advisor, Miss Warrner, headed south to Indianapolis for the majority of the day. Our first destination was to a Hamilton Southeastern Junior High School in Fishers, Indiana. The construction project is a design-build project where Hagerman, Inc. is the general contractor and CSO Architects is the head of the design team. The project is in full motion with most of the concrete poured, most masonry completed and a majority of the brick veneer finished. The new junior high school will serve 5th and 6th grade students from the Hamilton Southeastern School District. The project included a large educational wing including science rooms, and a media center. The other portion of the school included two gyms, locker rooms, music rooms, administrative offices, a kitchen, and an auditoria that will serve as a cafeteria and an auditorium. There is also a football field, track, tennis courts, soccer field, concession building, and parking lots that are starting to take shape around the site. It is a very unique project being design-build, and the superintendent, Jim Burkett, explained the positives and negative of a design-build project. It is approximately a 34 million dollar project and is expected to be completed before August 2012 for the start of the school year. We want to say a special thank you to Jim Burkett (Superintendent) and Greg Delegrange (Project Engineer) from Hagerman, Inc. for giving us a wonderful tour of the facility. All together it was a very educational trip and we are very thankful to have had this opportunity.
CMSO Field Trip to Riley Childrens Hospital
On October 1st, 2011, we continued our field trip farther south after visiting the Hamilton Southeastern Junior High School in Fishers, Indiana. After the first site visit we headed to downtown Indianapolis to visit an IU Health expansion at Riley Hospital. The Riley Hospital for Children Simon Family Tower at Indiana University Health began in the summer of 2006. This project has many unique aspects. There were actually two separate phases of this project where different general contractors were in charge of the separate phases. We visited phase two of the project. For this phase, the general contracting is being done by Messer Construction and Harmon Construction as a joint venture project. This project was also unique because the building is occupied, and not only occupied, but occupied by children with very weak immune systems who could become very sick or sicker by a little construction dust or debris. The safety regulations and systems set in place for this project were unbelievable. It was noticed very quickly that planning and teamwork was essential for this construction project to run smoothly and to be successful. It was also a very tight site with no staging area outside because all sides of the hospital needed to be used for ambulances and emergency personnel. Basically the building is being built floor by floor so that when one floor is finished they can give Riley Hospital access to that floor and it becomes a working hospital. Again this was another very educational site, and it was very cool to see a building being built that has the potential to help many children for years to come. We want to thank Ball State CM alumnus Brian Kirschner, from Harmon Construction, who gave us a wonderful tour of the facility.
CMSO Field Trip to Progress Rail Services
On September 22nd, 2011 a few CMSO members packed up and headed to visit a unique project located in Muncie, Indiana. Over the past year Wilhelm Construction out of Indianapolis has been renovating and building a new home for the Progress Rail Services right here in Muncie. Approximately fifteen students from our organization toured the new facility that has actually started producing locomotives while construction is being completed, which made this visit even more interesting. Although we were there to learn about the construction project, it was a very neat experience to see a locomotive being created. Wilhelms main objective was to take an old factory that had been empty for years and flip it into a working locomotive assembly line. We want to say a great thanks to Dennis Lods with Wilhelm Construction for giving us a wonderful tour of the new facility. This new facility is owned by a nationwide company and will hopefully bring many jobs to the Muncie area. Some of the main renovations included concrete work, a new roof, and lots of electrical and mechanical upgrades. The building included multiple permanent cranes, a fuel station, testing stations, paint rooms, offices, and much more. All together our organization enjoyed the tour and is thankful for the opportunity to view this site. Again, we would like to thank Dennis Lods (Superintendent) and Larry Roan, (Ball State CM Advisory Board President and Vice President of Business Development) from Wilhelm Construction for helping set this visit up and allowing our group to visit.
Habitat for Humanity
On October 29th, 13 students from CMSO woke up bright and early to work on a house constructed for Habitat for Humanity. Working though the morning and afternoon, students gave their expertise in trim work, painting, calking, joist work, and other miscellaneous tasks. The house was near completed and with the students' help they were able to bring a family one step closer to living in a house. Habitat for Humanity was extremely gracious of the help they recieved from CMSO. They are currenly building about one house every year with another in house starting in the early months of next year. Hopefully, with another turnout like this past Saturday, CMSO will get the chance for more hands on work with Habitat for Humanity of Muncie.
