About the wire The Wire Fox Terrier is a member of the terrier group, The breed was originally used for locating the position of foxes in their tunnels, killing vermin and hunting rabbits. Today they are still used as hunters but more commonly as companions!
The Wire is a small active and lively terrier. They have a narrow head and a short back. Their top coats are dense with a wiry texture and undercoats have shorter, softer hair.
Weight & Height Range Dogs should measure no more than 39cms at the withers, bitches slightly less. Dogs weigh between 7.3-8.2kgs and bitches should ideally weigh between 6.8-7.7kgs.
Character & Temperament
In general the Wire is a friendly, devoted and affectionate dog with lots of personality. They can be protective if they feel a member of their family is in danger or being threatened. In the past they have had a reputation a being a bit snappy and wilful but if you select your puppy carefully this should not be a problem. Wires get on well with children and do make ideal family pets.
They have to be socialised from an early age especially with cats and any other household pets. Keen gardeners may find that this dog digs up their plants rather quickly as digging is one of their favourite pastimes if not corrected, but as with many other breeds, with initial training this is not a problem. They may be troublesome with other dogs if not properly socialised.
Colour
The Wire Fox Terrier can be white with black, black and tan or tan markings. White should predominate.
Intelligence & Trainability
The Wire is an intelligent terrier but can be a bit stubborn like most terriers. Training is relatively easy but owners must be consistent and firm. They like to bark and dig so must be trained to stop these actions on command. They can be quite dominant over other dogs so should be properly socialised as puppies. Wires are not easy to obedience train, which is why it is usually safer to exercise them on a lead in public places or anywhere they could get themselves into mischief!
about the wire2 Grooming the Wire does require a bit of time and it can be expensive, as you may need to get a professional groomer to keep the dog’s coat looking its best. Hand stripping of the coat will be necessary several times a year; this can be time consuming so you may find it easier to get someone else to do it for you. 'Hand stripping' means that the hair is pulled out rather than cut with scissors or clippers. If the hair is not trimmed it continues to grow in length, the hair does not moult like many other breeds. In the wild longer dead hairs would naturally be pulled out as they run through bushes and brambles - thus keeping their coat short. If a wire's coat is cut it tends to lose it's characteristic wiry texture and the colours become pale. The distinctive Wire Fox Terrier trimming should be first carried out when the puppy is around three months old.
The Wire should be brushed and combed several times a week to keep the coat clean and tangle free. To prepare a wires' coat for a show requires effort beyond what is generally needed to keep them neat and smart looking. Work would normally begin many weeks before a show. 'Professional Handlers' are frequently used by owners to prepare the coat, get the dog into top condition and show the dog.
Exercise Requirements Wires should have lots of exercise, they are full of energy and like nothing better than a long walk but they are quite happy to do as little or as much as you want to do so if its raining outside they would be more than happy to curl up on the sofa with you!
They do well in agility and flyball games. A Wire will happily join in with any outdoor games where the children are playing, the rougher and dirtier the better!
They should be kept on a lead near traffic under proper control as they do have a tendency to chase cats or anything else that catches their attention, only because they love to play chasing games. A fully fenced in garden is a must. They can live with cats in their own home but outside they will chase them.
Ailments: As a breed the Wire is a hardy dog that doesn’t suffer from many health problems and any problems they do have tend to be as individuals and non-breed specific. The breed’s hardy constitution and known longevity has never led to the need for breed testing for clinical or hereditary defects.
Age Expectancy About 13-14 years.

'Luna' came to us in July 2009 and from the moment she walked through the door has fitted in with the family she is such a happy girl full of life she loves nothing better than playing with the wires she spends the days playing and sitting on our laps while we work and her evenings are spent curled up with Nancy, Lottie and Ruby!
Thank you to Wendy Allenby (Wybnella Havanese) for allowing us to have such a beautiful girl. Also thanks to Linda Kidger (Kidglyn Havanese) for all your help.
Luna has had a fabulous 2010 and has been placed highly at every Championship show.
Below are a small number of Luna's critiques:
"Wybnella’s Starlight for Wizzizz, white with excellent pigment, dark eye, well balanced body shape, straight active mover. Coat just needs to grow to complete picture. " Judge Val Blore
" Wybnella’s Starlight for Wizzizz, correct make & shape, close up to those above but not quite as advanced on the day." Judge S. Mallard

about the Havanese The Havanese is the Cuban member of the Bichon family, a group which includes Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Coton de Tulear, Lowchen and Maltese. These breeds differ in coat type and character. They are thought to have originated in the Mediterranean area. Bichon type dogs were probably taken to Cuba by traders & settlers and to have evolved into the HAVANESE. Originally the lap dog of the aristocracy, they became, in time, the much loved pet of the ordinary Cuban.
A Companion Dog. HEIGHT: 9-11 ins (23-28cm) HAPPY, affectionate, playful, Gentle. Good with childreen, Trainable a very intelligent and beautiful breed.
The havanese is a small sturdy dog, slightly longer than tall .They have a a double coat i.e. an outer coat of long silky hair which is generally wavy to straight with a soft undercoat. The coat should be abundant though light in texture .The coat comes in many colours ranging from white, all shades of cream, gold, sables, tobacco brown, silver, to black and any combination of these colours, giving particolours and tricolours.
The coat is untrimmed for showing except for the hair on the feet which should be neatened. Havanese have almond shaped eyes and a gentle and intelligent expression .Their legs are relatively short but not so short as to make the dog too close to the ground. They move in a jaunty fashion with a unique springy step, are very agile, and carry their plumed tails over their backs when on the move. A completely natural look is what is required.
Character - happy with a zest for life, they adore their family, bonding closely with them. This is the main reason why Havanese are not suitable as kennel dogs. Their greatest desire is to live at home as part of the family. They will become sad & introverted if left alone regularly or repeatedly for the greater part of the day & so are not suitable for people who work full time. Havanese need companionship to thrive.
They are very good with children, especially older children who can appreciate their small size & play with them appropriately. They love their toys & can be very entertaining involving their humans in games of their own devising.
Wire Sutable Would a wire be suitable for us???
Do you want a Wire Fox Terrier because you have seen them on TV, in films or books?
Please think again. A dog is not a fashion accessory that can be discarded when you are bored with it.
Do you want a Wire Fox Terrier because they are glamorous and eye-catching?
Please think again. To achieve that look is both very expensive and time-consuming. This is a breed that needs regular grooming.
Do you want a Wire Fox Terrier even though you are out at work all day?
Please think again. A Wire Fox Terrier can be noisy and destructive when left alone for long periods.
Do you want a quiet terrier?
Please think again. The Wire Fox Terrier can be full of energy and if not trained can become overpowering.
Do you want an obedient companion?
Please think again. The Wire Fox Terrier has a strong hunting instinct and can even with training chase Rabbits, Foxes, Mice, Squirrels, Rats, Birds, Deer, Cows, Sheep, Horses, Cats, other dogs or anything that looks fun to chase!!!
Do you want a dog that is good with kids?
Please think again. Wires are a high energy breed that wants to bounce and play they can nip when over excited and young children can be used as skittles by a wire, even though wires are not that big they still have a lot of power. Small children may become overwhelmed by this. Older children over the age of 8 should not have a problem.
wire sut2 Are you planning to have baby?
Please think again. Wires can get extremely jealous; if anyone gets attention they will study to see and note who is getting what. Again they are so high energy they can easily without meaning to bounce on a baby or even jump into a crib if they see a toy they want.
Do you already own a dog?
Please think again. Most Terriers including wires will challenge to become ‘top dog’ with another dog of the same sex even if they are from the same litter. Terriers are extremely jealous; if one dog gets attention, the other must also. They actually watch to see and note who is getting what. This may produce either a strong protest of possibly a FIGHT or a fit of the sulks.
Do you have a pond or Swimming pool?
Please think again. Wires LOVE water and even as puppies they are curious of water, can take a dip and have problems getting out again even as adults it only takes a few minutes for a dog to drown.
Are you looking for a puppy now?
Please think again. Wires are a small popular breed it is rare to find a puppy straight away, you have to be prepared to go onto several waiting lists for up to a year before you will find a puppy.
In 2009 there was only 604 wires registered with The Kennel Club compared to a Labrador Retriever with 40,643 or Border Terrier with 8,214 dogs registered. The Kennel Clubs records show that there were 651 wires puppies registed in 2000, 598 in 2001, 665 in 2002, 593 in 2003, 748 in 2004 668 in 2005, 688in 2006, 634 in 2007 and 763 in 2008
Do you live in a flat without a garden or have a garden with no or low fences?
Please think again. Wire are so high energy even with walking they need their own space to let off steam or just go to the loo, wires can be difficult to house train and need a well fenced garden to go into frequently. They are good climbers and jumpers and can easily clear 4 foot (they are also quite good diggers as well!)
BUT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A MAD, FUN, HIGH ENERGY, LOVING COMPANION THE WIRE FOX TERRIER COULD BE THE BREED FOR YOU!!!
about the havanese2 Intelligent -YES!! Havanese mix well with other breeds. They enjoy obedience training & mini agility or indeed any pastime in which they can participate & be with their owner. They want to please while still maintaining their own individual character. They are easy to house train as they are very clean by nature. They don't mind water & indeed have been known to swim! They will give warning but are not "yappy"
Grooming - ESSENTIAL! HAVANESE will benefit from being combed through and brushed daily, plus the normal maintenance of ears, eyes & nails. Advice on this will be available from the breeder or the breed club.
Health -At present the club is not aware of any major health problems other than possible eye problems. We promote yearly eye testing of all HAVANESE & maintain a voluntary register of the results. The club recommend that prospective owners buy only puppies whose parents have current clear eye certificates.
RESPONSIBILITY as an HAVANESE OWNER - a little warning! The adorable nature of the HAVANESE with it's appealing face, mannerisms & personality can within a very short time lead to it being spoiled. It is tempting to carry them about constantly, to baby them-DON'T. Allow them to run, play, have a daily walk, be a dog. Even if most of the time, they don't think they are !
HAVANESE are a rare breed not just in the U.K. but worldwide so you may have to wait until a puppy is available. For further information contact our club secretary.

off lead wire Wire Fox Terriers off the lead???
A great number of owners and breeders will say you can't let a Wire off the lead, this is not always true as with careful training, some not all, wires can go off the lead BUT you must remember Wires are true terriers and may give chase after a rabbit, bird or something that looks fun to chase and even with careful training the possibility is always there!
