Welcome to Whanganui Bay, one of New Zealands premium North Island crags. Join us for 3 days of fun, work and learning. It's also an opportunity to meet and hear about the hapu (tribe) of Ngati Te Maunga. This event is a fund raiser to help open the Marae.

To celebrate, a Hangi will be Saturday nights meal, which will be prepared by the climbers.

With over 200+ climbs on the western shores of lake Taupo this makes for a fantastic setting and a fun weekend...

7.30 – Registration tent open (also open Friday night) – ($45 per person - you get hangi/Entertainment/Workshops/climbing and camping fees – one payment for 3 days / 2 nights). Please try and register before Powhiri. No Pay no stay policy - Casual climbing is closed this weekend.

9.30 - Powhiri/Karakia by local Kaumatua.

10am – Lunch - Participate in working bee / working groups are: Hangi Prep, Route Identification, Firewood collection.

2pm – Workshops/free climbing

6pm - Hangi – Have meal with Whanau (families) from Ngati Te Maunga.

7pm – Guest Speaker.

8pm – 12am - Entertainment

10am – Workshops

1pm - Free Climbing

6pm - BBQ (bring some coin)

8pm - Entertainment

Where is it?

Western RD Rd 32 Look for farm sign: Whakarawa Farm Carved on wooden sign at gate. This is the gate entry, follow road through farm. You will then travel down to Whanganui Bay, this takes approximately 20mins. Give way to cars coming UP the road. On the lakeshore there will be a registration tent, this is the best place to start!

The more tickets you buy the greater your chances, so bring some notes….Hangdog will also be running a couple of workshops, will let you know what they are once confirmed.Also planning to cut a new track at the working bee Saturday morning 10-1pm before the climbing/workshop starts. The current track to the plateau (pink) is to be closed (yellow) and new entry point moved back up the road (red) away from the houses. So please bring axe, shovel, slasher, chainsaw to make this quick work and enjoyable. Awaiting on Trustee approval in the next couple of weeks. BITS and PIECES:• Currently in discussion with a club to get our hands on some Kayaks, we have a pontoon which we want to anchor to the left side of the bay. Climbers would paddle to pontoon for trad climbing/exploration. • We want to expand the event to kayakers, and plan to have Kayakers start with us Saturday morning (Powhiri), have a day paddle south and next day north. They would come back in afternoon/evening to join us for Hangi and entertainment. Article Extraction from NZ Climbers Magazine – March 2011Whanganui Bay NZ Rock Festival 2011The inaugural Whanganui Bay NZ Rock Festival was held on the weekend of 29-31 January, and with more than 50 climbers braving Friday night's storm (and the Bay's legendary road) the weekend was a huge success. The Rock Festival aimed to bring together climbers and the Whanganui Bay Trustees to enhance relationships between the two groups, as well as giving climbers the opportunity to attend a bolting course, experience a Whanganui Bay hangi, climb some of the best rock in New Zealand, and shed blood, sweat, and tears clearing gorse from the access tracks.The hospitality of the Ngati Te Maunga whanau was amazing. Climbers were welcomed to the Bay on Saturday morning with Tauhopa Hepi leading a powhiri, and Wellington climber Will Waterson doing a brilliant job representing the climbers and speaking on our behalf. There were a lot of international climbers present - as well as plenty of New Zealand climbers who hadn't previously had the opportunity to take part in a powhiri - so this was a unique and fitting start to the weekend.Saturday saw firewood being collected for the hangi, tracks around Whekenui being cleared, and repairs being made on the road down to the Bay to ensure that we weren't going to be trapped there forever (no such luck, eh?), while the afternoon saw a route sending frenzy as everyone realized that they needed to get some climbing done to earn their dinners. Brook, Frank, and Conrad from Hangdog climbing gym in Lower Hutt ran workshops on belaying and climbing technique as well this afternoon. The hangi which Ngati Te Maunga put on that night was huge and absolutely fantastic, and was enjoyed around a bonfire with music playing into the small hours.On Sunday the bolting course kicked off. Led by James Wright, Matt, and Craig, the course gave ten eager students the opportunity to rebolt some classic lines and replace anchors which were looking a bit worse for wear. James had also been busy over the weeks leading up to the weekend cutting tracks and cleaning routes to encourage people to explore further afield and try some climbs that haven't seen much traffic in recent years. That night a raffle was drawn, with Hangdog donating $1000 of climbing gear to raise funds for the marae, and an open air film rounded out the day. There was more climbing on Monday, of course, before everyone had to scarper back to their jobs and regular commitments.Special thanks for this weekend are due to Tom Hepi, Chairperson of Whanganui Bay Trustees, Tania Hamil who ran registrations on Saturday and organized the hangi table, Aunty Matty who ran a weaving workshop for climbers up at the marae, and Tauhopa Hepi who led the powhiri. A huge "thank you" also goes to Marlon Hepi for proposing the festival and organizing the whole thing.
