CWYDC Film PRESS RELEASE PRESS RELEASE
from County Wexford Youth Dance Company
The County Wexford Youth Dance Company (CWYDC) launched their new Dance Film Off Your Trolley at a reception during the Sonraigh Youth Dance Festival at Wexford Opera House.
Granted aided by Leargas European Youth in Action programme this dance film afforded six youth dance members and six young technical crew the opportunity to make their own film under the watchful eyes of director Terence White (director of Reel New Ross) and choreographer Deirdre Grant (artistic director form Myriad Dance). Shot in January 2011 in below freezing conditions, this dance film presents a quirky, lighthearted view of boredom and what young people do to fill in time and challenges stereotypical views adults have of young people.
At the reception in the Festival Room three members of the C.W.Y.D.C led the speeches and gave the audience an insight into the process of how they made the film. The launch was attended by the Head of Dance at the Arts Council Of Ireland, Davide Terlingo and the Arts Council dance consultant Jenny Roche, as well as the entire film crew of Off Your Trolley. The film itself premiered on the O'Reilly Stage as part of a larger gala show which involved super live dance performance by the Kerry Youth Dance Company, Dublin Youth Dance Company, Company B dance company (Dublin based), House of Anne dance company (Cork-based).
For More information - C.W.Y.D.C. have also had the opportunity to create our first blog: http://cwydc.wordpress.com about the process of making this dance film.
County Wexford Youth Dance Company is hosted by contemporary dance company Myriad Dance, based in Wexford Opera House. Its main funder is Wexford County Council.

Education and Community
About Education & Outreach
Since its inception, Myriad Dance has built up extensive experience in education, community and after school dance programmes, by running consistent high quality dance projects all over Ireland.
The companys determination to develop youth & community dance particularly in its own home region in Co Wexford, resulted in one of the most successful youth dance projects in Ireland: the Pulse! Youth Dance Project in 2001-2008. Designed in tandem with the Arts Department in Wexford County Council it is now one of the longest running and biggest dance initiatives in the country in this area.
Pulse! has involved thousands of children and young people in classes, workshops, long-term projects and performances and is responsible for the formation of Sonraigh Youth Dance Festival and County Wexford Youth Dance Company , and is now developed into a broader Education & Outreach Programme as part of Myriad Dance.
Why?
The Education & Outreach Programme is a core part of Myriad Dance and has an invaluable connection with the companys Professional Development Programme and Performance Work.
Myriad Dance is dedicated to educating young people and adults about dance and movement, and therefore runs children, adult and youth dance classes - including County Wexford Youth Dance Company; workshops and residencies in schools and community groups; outreach activities at festivals & other public events, and development initiatives for teachers and youth leaders.
Through active participation in creative and contemporary dance, Myriad Dance aims to stimulate the imagination, energy and artistry of people of all ages allowing participants to experience their creative potential through dance.
How we work All Education & Outreach activities are informed by Myriad Dances trademark style of vibrant, creative and playful movement, and are designed to give participants the chance to develop technical, choreographic and improvisational skills. In a person-centered environment, participants are encouraged and supported to explore new styles of movement, and to enjoy the energy, freedom & excitement that the company offers. It is through dance participation and experiential learning that a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art form is gained.

Performances-Works Myriad's BODY OF WORK VIDEOS
Performance Work
The companys work is a mixture of guest artist/choreographer work and artistic director's work that alternates on a regular basis supporting the needs of the company and its vision.
In the past ten years of dance production Myriad Dance has showcased a rich variety of engaging work always meaningful and relevant to their community. It is in particular their fearlessness of working with their own immediate community and surroundings and their insistance in working with the best of local or Irish emerging artists as well as artists from other disciplines that sets them apart from other dance performance companies in Ireland.
The period 2001-2008, saw Myriad exist outside a theatrical home. Then in 2009 the company found a new home and rehearses and showcases its performnce work at the Wexford Opera House.
As a result of this previous period, Myriad has now much more site specific performance work in it's repertoire than theatre performance work but has had a delightful knock on affect of making their dance relevant and very engaging to a diverse theatre going audience both in Wexford and beyond.
In 2009 Myriad had the wonderful opportunity to work with the much loved German artist Wolfgang Hoffmann and in the process ended up redesigning their company to explore different models of producing work and a move away from traditional production methods and into Improvised and Instant Composition Performance based projects.
Since 2010, under the direction of its artistic director Deirdre Grant, the company is developing a methodology using improvisational dance practices that incorporates somatic studies and how these methods apply to dance performance. Deirdre created Project 101 for Myriad which was performed in June 2010 and involved 101 performers in an outdoor performance project.
Myriad Dance has performed at the following festivals:
Myriad Dance has presented its work at a number of Festivals such as the Dublin Dance Festival (2008), Vibrate Dance Festival (2008), Dublin Fringe Festival (2006 & 2005 & 2009), DanCelebration Festival, Arizona (2006 & 2005) and Eigse Carlow Arts Festival (2004) as well as hosting its very own Sonraigh Youth Dance Festival in 2007/8 and later in 2010 again.

INNERSCAPES
Deirdre Deirdre Grant - Artistic Director
Deirdre is co-founder of Myriad Dance and has been its Artistic Director since 1999.
Deirdre was first introduced to contemporary dance through the Wexford Arts Centre, joining the Barefoot Youth Dance Company in 1984. She went on to train at Middlesex University, London, England, where she obtained a BA Dance with Education. Since then, Deirdre have been developing contemporary dance regionally in Ireland, originally as a freelance dance artist, and later through her work with Myriad Dance.
As Artistic Director of Myriad, Deirdre has developed a reputation for producing work in both professional and artist-in-the-community contexts. Her flexible, accessible and very visual style has been seen in widely varying performance settings over a ten year period; theatre, site-specific and adapted non-traditional spaces for audiences, regionally around Ireland and in the U.S.
Her choreographic credits with the company include; Broken Masque (1999), Together from Shortcuts & Storylines (2000), In an Instant (2001), Scramble (outdoors in 2002), Rainbow (2003), Mutation (gallery piece in 2004), Ruins (outdoors 2007), Authenticity (2008) and Project 101 (scheduled - outdoors 2010).
Since 2006, and importantly since the company's visit to, and experience of outdoor improvisations around Arizona's 12th century historical ruins, Deirdre has used ideas and methodologies, incorporating ideas from her experiences of Somatic Studies, to explore deep inner movement vocabulary, promote intelligent instinctual movement, play and individual movement vocabularies and filtering them into both her performance and teaching contexts.
Deirdre is an active member the County Wexford Community Arts Network panel of inter-disciplinary artists, which represents the cream of best artists in arts practice in the county. She has two decades of experience in teaching, devising performance projects for children, youth and special needs and working hand in hand alongside organisations, art centres and arts offices around the country, incorporating her own blend of creative choreographic work and ideas into workshops with the public.
Deirdre has had a huge interest in dance development throughout her career, and in making positive dance experiences happen for people across the board, whilst always feeling the need to protect the welfare of dance artists who deliver high volumes of creativity, dynamic energy or who feel they have no career path in a regional environment. Hence the move and focus into professional development of artists as a co-existing programme for all dance artists who are working with Myriad Dance.
Under Deirdre's direction, Myriad Dance has grown from a company making production or short term project work once a year to a full time company employing 3 full-time staff, with a busy Education & Community wing. She is responsible for guiding the company into it's new permanent home at the Wexford Opera House and designing the new company motto Making Dance Happen / Making Dance Matter, leading the company into the period 2010 onwards.

Mentoring Programme Mentoring Programme for 2010
The Myriad Dance Mentoring Programme (MP) is an extension of the pre-existing programme, which now encompasses a structured cross-over dance project from both Myriads Education & Outreach Programme and Professional Development Programme (run with the support of Dance Ireland and ArtLinks).
Participants of the MP will have the specific opportunity to work alongside the Artistic Director (AD):
Shadowing the work of the AD, acquiring a skill base of somatic studies for creative dance projects in both the professional choreographic area and the community dance environment.
Working through developmental movement patterns and early childhood development skills in workshops.
The AD incorporates a people-centered approach in all her work, and the participant will actively/practically work alongside the AD, who will be integrating methodology from Somatic Studies of the body into her specialist work in special needs, children and the training of young dancers. This work is seen as both highly experimental and radical, overhauling traditional contemporary dance modes of learning.
The MP participant will be exploring the world of dance teaching and facilitation, in a variety of settings, and with different age groups.
On-the-job training opportunities will be offered in Myriad Dances core After School Programme, the County Wexford Youth Dance Company and on a variety of short and long term projects in school and community groups through practical class/workshop assistance and ongoing reflection. These experiences will allow participants to further develop and deepen skills such as Lesson Planning, Group Facilitation and Management, Laban Analysis, Choreography, Team Work and Dance Research.
Similarly to the AD, the EOD uses a person-centered approach in all her classes, workshops and projects. The EOD integrates methodology from Laban Studies in the Classes, Workshops and Projects she runs, and the MP participant will have the opportunity to be actively involved in this exciting Education & Outreach Work.

Tim ODonnell is a New York based dance artist who has been studying, teaching, and performing in both the United States and Europe for the past 12 years. His exploration in dance and movement is strongly rooted in a deep physical listening and a sense of adventure. His classes range from the gentle and subtle to the acrobatic and fluidly athletic. He holds an MFA in Dance from Arizona State University and has maintained a private practice in therapeutic bodywork and somatic movement since 1991. Currently he is on faculty at Movement Research and is teaching and performing in NYC where he resides.
INNERSCAPES is an annual movement investigation platform/course that has been running since 2005, and has developed organically alongside the company as it has grown.
The ethos of this initiative is to encourage the utilization of a variety of different inner-body work experiences, and develop experimentation and investigation into movement for dance creation and performance.
In the past we have offered workshops in Contact Improvisation, Somatic Studies, cellular-based dance practices (Deborah Hay based) and Body-Mind Centering. We regularly look into alternative practice within contemporary dance and performance.
INNERSCAPES facilitates open workshop time and opportunities for artists to experiment and innovate, discuss, share and exchange ideas in a non-judgemental, yet stimulating environment.

Dance Ability
Myriad Dance works with local day care centres and residential care homes for people with mild/medium level learning difficulties. The company offers short weekly workshop series to centres both in its home studio at the Wexford Opera House and also regularly travels into centres. Even though Myriad runs short blasts of weekly dance workshops (4 to 6 weeks at a time), it works with a long term view - sometimes working with the same groups repetitively over a period of years.
Myriad works from both developmental and artistic principals, devising creative work appropriate to the age group and abilities of each group. The dance workshops are strongly participant-driven, yet incorporate dance concepts with rich artistic visual stimuli and themes. Myriad Dance particularly enjoys working hand in hand with organisations and care workers/managers in devising creative building blocks that support the learning of creative movement and expression.
Since 2004, Myriad Dance runs an integrated annual dance performance project - 'The Friendship Project' - every summer with the service users of Ard Aoibhinn Day Care Centre in Wexford and the young people of the County Wexford Youth Dance Company.
Myriad Dance captured the beauty of this project on a DVD titled 'The Friendship Project' (2008), edited by Terence White and facilitated by Artistic Director, Deirdre Grant.

Community Residencies on Offer
Myriad Dance is delighted to have remained consistently active in developing dance regionally and blending a tangible dynamic, on the ground feel and presence wherever they work.
The approachability of the dance artists, and the accessibility of the company's performance and workshop work, have both strongly contributed to the success of our community residencies and Company/Artist In Residence type engagements. Several types of residencies have been run in the past. In 2010 the company offers 3 types of workshop engagement:
Once-off dance workshops, based around themes and choreographic ideas using its company performance work at an appropriate level for the participants. Theme-based dance residency projects, where participants devise, create and shape dance alongside Myriad Dance artists from rehearsal to performance. These projects are usually week-long. Co-Create programmes, which are specifically designed dance projects for designated areas/organisation, i.e. projects that are designed in tandem with County and Borough Councils, Arts Centres and sometimes community organisations through CWCAN. Co-Create Programmes are of a more long term and developmental nature. Over the past ten years, Myriad Dance has worked with a diverse range of Social & Artistic Programmers on Co-Create Programmes, from Programme Managers in venues to Arts Officers, Youth Workers,Care Workers, Parental Groups and Parish Committees.
If your organisation or group is interested in working with Myriad Dance on a Company In Residency idea or short term workshops, please contact us on 053 9174665 or email info_myriaddance.com. We would be happy to meet with you to discuss the creative possibilities and to develop a workshop or project plan that is specifically tailored to meet the needs of your group.
History HISTORY
Formed in 1999, by Deirdre Grant and Brid Malone, Myriad Dance has grown from a company producing short term once-off projects to a full-time company; producing work for national and International audiences, running Professional Development Programmes for dance artists living in the South East of Ireland, providing an extensive Education and Community Programme and offering weekly classes, once-off workshops and long term residencies at both regional and national levels.
The extensive work of Myriad Dance over the past 10 years would not have been possible without the continued financial support from both The Arts Council of Ireland and the Arts Department of Wexford County Council. In recent years, the company is also delighted to have strengthened its partnership with Dance Ireland.
Through this partnership the company runs a series of classes and workshops for professional dance artists, such as professional morning classes and INNERSCAPES (movement investigation workshops). In 2009, Myriad was also delighted to work in partnership with ArtLinks on its INNERSCAPES Easter platform.
It was always the ambition of the company to find itself a permanent home. In June 2009 that dream became a reality when Myriad Dance moved into the newly built Wexford Opera House as its resident dance company. This new opportunity to collaborate and co-produce work with Wexford Opera House is an intriguing and exciting development for the company.
The company is also very pleased that it finally has a long term home that supports the quality and volume of its work in the areas of performance, professional development and education and community work.
Mentoring Extra Participants of the MP also have an opportunity to:
Attend on all 3 INNERSCAPES Professional Development courses throughout the year and attend the structured Attend Professional Morning classes weekly.
Dance in Myriad Dance performance projects (depending on availability, level of experience, etc.)
Work in a vibrant arts scene in the South East of Ireland at the Wexford Opera House building and rehearsal rooms.
Participation on the MP requires part-time commitment and is based on experiential based learning within this unique production company.
Participation may also lead to future employment opportunities within the company.
