Roofs have been necessary since our ancestors first stepped out of their caves and began building shelters using indigenous materials. While our modern-day coverings have come a long way from thatched roofs of grass and twigs, the principle remains the same -- skilled craftsmen use their talents to provide lasting shelter and protection.Roofers Local No. 33 includes Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and eastern and central Massachusetts, including the counties of Barnstable, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, and Worcester.

Shim, Cal. Super. Ct, CTN 10011927 5/23/2011; California v. Kim, Cal.super. Ct, CTN 10011910 5/23/2011).The San Francisco District Attorney and California Division of Occupational safety and Health announced that the owner of California C&R, Inc., Sam Hyung Goo Shim, 68, and foreman Jwa Young Kim, 56, were sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to violating Labor code 6425,”Willful violation on Cal/OSHA order causing death.” Shim also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, workers’ compensation premium fraud, and unemployment tax evasion.Antonio Martinez, 39, was working atop a four-story apartment building in San Francisco on Jan. 16, 2008, when he fell to his death on a sidewalk 38 feet below. A Cal/OSHA investigation determined that none of the roofing crew members were wearing fall protection gear, and that there were no barriers or scaffolds. Also, the workers lacked safety training, and the company had no written safety policies.Cal/OSHA fined the roofing contractor $78,485 in July 2008 and presented the results of the investigation to the San Francisco prosecutor’s office. In April 2010, Shim and Kim were indicted by a grand jury. The two pleaded guilty May 23 as part of a plea negotiation. The two men as well as California C&R were ordered to pay restitution to Martinez’s family.“The prosecution and conviction of these two defendants whose blatant disregard for their worker’s safety resulted in his untimely and preventable death sends a loud and clear message to anyone doing business in our city,” District Attorney George Gascon said. “You will not get a free pass when your conduct jeopardizes the health and well being of individuals seeking to earn an honest living.” By Bruce Rolfsen
