Objectives
It has oft been said: there is a reason for everything. Nothing in this world can come from nothing. Short of waxing philosophical, but really, when you decide to make a website, it would be for something you intend to achieve, and you are probably convinced you can do that when you make your own website, hence your resolve to actually create one.
In general, what are your possible purposes for creating a website? A website may be created for business, for education, research and other such academic purposes, for fun and entertainment, for communications, for socializing and for a host of other purposes seemingly unique to each person creating a website.
Why is it important to establish the purpose of the website you intend to create? Knowing what you intend to achieve through your website will first and foremost give it some direction. That is very important when you create a website, because that will help you determine what the layout of your home page would be, and how you can work on each of your web pages linked to your website. This deliberate purpose will guide you as you work with the first consideration above discussed, which is the framework of your website. It can help you gain a very clear perspective on the direction which your website is going to take.
What are other reasons that make website purpose an important consideration in website building? Think of different approaches to language use depending on the purpose for which you are building your website. If you are going to make a websitefor business, for example, the language to be used is definitely going to be different from that of a website devoted to trends and fashion. We expect that language used for business will either be formal like in the case of showing business profiles, or featuring business solutions, or informal and even persuasive in style, when it comes to advertising for business, also depending on the target clientele for the products or services advertised. If the website will be focused on academic research or informational topics, we expect the language thereof to be more of the formal type, sometimes scientific or technical, depending on the subject matter. If the website is intended for fun and entertainment, or to address specific topics for the youth, you will find language to be informal, with a lot of slang and colloquials, or newly-coined words popular with todays generation. If the website is devoted to specific sports, or specialized topics like cars and computer engineering or programming, then you would expect to include highly specialized and technical color of language consistent with the website subject matter. Hence, to establish your website purpose at the onset will definitely be your guide in determining the language use and style you will employ when working on your website. This will also entail the consideration of another important consideration, which is your target audience, to make your website such a success.
This applies not only to language, but also to design. You do not expect to see designs with loud and bold colors, when your browse business websites that are on the formal side in our example, those featuring business profiles and portfolios. However, business websites can and do feature really colorful designs when the purpose is advertising products and services to have striking, eye-catching designs that will stick to the minds of consumers, thus effectively promoting these products and services. In the case of academic websites, you also would not expect to see patterns or backgrounds that are too colorful, or designs that are too detailed or consisting of so many items at the same time. Usually when the website is for academic purposes, you will see minimalist layouts and designs, consisting only of basic lines and limited graphics, so as not to clutter the mind in search of further learning. However, if you make a website for fun and entertainment, you can go with a mix and match of so many designs, styles and colors, so long as they remain pleasing to the eyes, and not over decorated. Website creators need to be flexible on this aspect, because you can employ experimentation and novelty in your designs, and come up with websites that are out of the ordinary. The important thing is: as soon as you determine your purpose and focus on it, you will know which designs will suit your website best, and how to work on your layout for optimum results. Web users will definitely appreciate a website that has been carefully thought out, not just some mixing and matching of elements that do not really lead into a coherent whole. Since your web pages are expected to be interconnected and linked to your home page, you should really meticulously map out what goes into your home page, and which features and content would go to your other web pages. This will give your website a sense of purpose, which is clearly reflected in your home page. Your web audience will know definitely why they clicked on your website in the first place.
