TheWastedSpaceProject
Welcome to our site...
The Wasted Space Project (WSP) invites you to get involved and help us grow.
The Wasted Space Project was set up by the community- for the community in response to the problem of 'wasted space' in and around Burslem, Stoke on Trent. We aim to utilise these spaces by tranforming them into beautiful communal vegetable gardens. For more information about who we are, what we do and our aims and objectives, read on and get in touch if you feel you can help in any way. Thank you.

Geurilla Gardening
In our latest meeting we discussed the idea of Geurilla Gardening. Though we all agreed that it would be a fun and 'red-tape-free' way to get veg in the ground, we wondered what the public perception of this method was. Would you like to be suprised by beans at the bus stop?, basil by the bench?, how about sweetcorn in the shrubs? we would appreciate your opinion... see our contacts page to share your thoughts with us.
About Us...
The Wasted Space Project was created by Nic Winstanley and Alex Shimwell in response to barren pieces of land in Burslem where they live. In these spaces they saw an opportunity to do something to make them useful - growing fruit and vegetables seemed like the obvious solution.
The Members..
The Wasted Space Project stands to benefit the community in many ways; firstly providing a space for people of all ages and backgrounds to grow fruit and veg locally instead of having to rely solely on supermarkets out of town. This WSP aims to provide a low cost, organic solution to current highly publicized problems like obesity, malnourishment and the ineducation of our younger generations regarding food. With the current economic crisis causing more and more land to fall into disrepair, this project can help communities utilize the spaces in a positive way, saving themselves money in the process. Community interaction, ecological benefits and improving the appearance of Burslem are almost byproducts of the WSP, but they are all very important to its committee members who are striving to mobilize the project over the coming months. There are five committee members so far including the organizers of the Burslem arts Festival Julie Gould and Julie Newbold and Bob Bennett, a local Fireman and avid allotment holder.
