Men's Fellowship Group Invites You to the "Seven Days in Utopia" Book Study
The Men's Fellowship Group is doing a book study on the book "Seven Days in Utopia" by David L. Cook. Any men interested in taking part in the group are invited to join us on Thursday evenings beginning at 6:00pm in the Youth Room. Books will be provided to all of those committed to joining the group. For more information, Contact Derek Young.
Men's Retreat Set for February 10-12 at Grace Bible Camp
The Men's Group will be holding it annual Men's Retreat at Grace Bible Camp in Goshen, VA on Friday, Feb.10-Sunday, Feb. 12. The topic of discussion will be how we, as men, are like David. Watch for more information about the retreat. For more information, contact Derek Young .
Women's Zumba Classes to Start February 6
Wanting to lose weight, get in shape for the new year or just fellowship with other women? Come try out the Zumba exercise class for free on Monday, February 6 from 5:30-6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. If you like the awesome music and up tempo beat and want to continue, the classes will begin on Monday, February 13 from 5:30-6:30pm. The cost is $40 for the entire eight week session or $7/class, if you choose to do it that way. See you on February 6!
5_5 Service Night--Sweet Senior Supper--February 12
On Sunday February 12, at 5:30, participants of 5_5 will be serving dinner to the senior members (ages 62 and older) of our church. Laughter and fellowship will be served in huge portions. Transportation will be provided by request. RSVP to the church office by February 10. Entertainment will be...entertaining. This will be a "must attend" event!
"Love Wins" Book Study Welcomes Additional Participants
The "Love Wins" book study that meets on Monday evenings at 7:00pm in the youth room is welcoming additional participants. "Love Wins" is by Rob Bell and fosters great discussion about our Christian belifs. The group meets on Monday evenings at 7:00pm in the Youth Room. Discussion facilitation is being shared by Abe Shearer and Derek Young weekly, and group members trade off bringing a light snack each night. For More information, contact Derek Young .
Worship Arts Camp For Kids Teaches 82 Kids to Celebrate and Worship God
On Saturday, January 28, 82 kids particiapted in Worship Arts Camp for Kids (WACK). WACK helped kids learn new exciting ways to worship God. The children then planned and presented the entire Sunday morning worship on January 29. Thank you to everyone that helped with WACK and to Heidi Bunn for Coordinating the entire event.
Women's Retreat Scheduled for April 27-29 at Grace Bible Camp
Save the date for April 27-29. The Women's Retreat is a great time where you can relax, learn more about god and yourself, and really connect to other women from the church. The retreat will once again be at Grace Bible Camp in Goshen, VA. Plan to take this time for yourself! The retreat's cost is $75 for a bunk room or $85 for a private room and this includes two nights stay, five meals and two snacks. A half-hour massage will be available for an extra $25. Registration will begin in February. Plan to come an invite a friend to join you!

Friday, February 3-Sunday, February 5 : Sr. High Ski Trip to Canaan Valley, WV--We will leave the church on Friday evening at 6:00. We will then ski on Saturday and Sunday. We will return to the church by 5:00pm Sunday evening. Everyone must register with Derek by Sunday, January 29.

Senior High meetings during the school year are held every Sunday evening from 6:15-9:15pm. The meeting consists of discussion time about a topic related to God and to our lives and the evening includes dinner at no cost to the youth.

Upcoming Junior High Activities
The Junior High group meets weekly from 5:30-8:00pm (September-May) on Wednesday evenings. Our evening begins with dinner and is followed by Christian Education time and discussion and then we end the evening with recreation. Open Gym time for all youth runs until 8:45pm.
Our Summer meetings are bi-weekly meetings and are activity nights.

Storytime Continues: Join us Friday's from 10:00-11:00am downstairs. We are meeting in the classroom closest to the multipurpose room--on the Dogwood Dr. side of the building. Bring your child for stories and songs followed by a snack, craft and playtime. Stories and songs are bibically based and appropriate for children approximately 6 months- 5 years of age, but all are welcome.
Worship Arts Camp for Kids : 82 kids attended WACK on Saturday, January 28. The children learned different ways to worship God and share his love with the world around them. The children then planned and presented the entire Sunday morning worship on January 29. Nearly 250 people attended the Sunday morning worship! Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with WACK 2012!
Volunteer Opportunities: If you are interested in serving in our church, the Children's Program has many opportunities for you! Heidi is currently signing people up to help with VBS (July 8-13, 2012), Sunday School, Summer Sunday School, Mack's Dock, and Praize Kidz. There is something that everyone can do! Talk to Heidi Bunn to find the best fit for you. Also, interested in doing the Children's Story on Sunday morning? Looking for some new voices to share!

At First Church, we understand the need and desire for small groups. We believe that small groups are a way to grow with one another and are a safe environment to share joys and concerns, ups and downs and how God is working in your life. We have a variety of small group opportunities that meet weekly beginning in the fall of each calendar year. Below are the groups that are currently meeting. 1900: Ten brethren, living in Harrisonburg, request preaching services. Cooks Creek, Greenmount and Mill Creek congregations jointly sponsor the development of a new congregation in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
1901: The first Sunday School and Worship services are held on June 9, with P.S. Thomas in charge of the service and J.M. Kagey in charge of preaching.
1906: A new sanctuary is constructed at a cost of $15,000. The new sanctuary is first used for worship on December 9.
1909: Cooks Creek, Greenmount and Mill Creek congregations release control of the Harrisonburg congregation. P.S. Thomas, who as served as pastor since 1901, remains pastor of the new congregation.
1918: Additional Sunday School rooms are added to the original building on High Street.
1923: N.D. Cool becomes the first pastor to be hired to a full time position.
1927: A second addition is added to the original building, this addition includes more Sunday School classrooms.
1951: The Harrisonburg First Church congregation moves across High Street to a larger building.
1971: Membership reaches an all-time high with 741 members.
1978: A 5.4 acre plot of land is purchased and a new building is constructed on Dogwood Drive. The new building has a sanctuary, twelve Sunday School classrooms and a kitchen.
1995: An addition and renovation to the existing building on Dogwood Drive begins. The renovation creates four new Sunday School classrooms and the addition adds a new fellowship hall, four additional Sunday School Classrooms and a full service kitchen.
2001: Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren celebrates its 100th anniversary.
2007: First Church becomes influential in "Project Nimule" helping the village of Nimule, Sudan. First Church donates money for school scholarships, kids toys and sports equipment through New Community Project and First Church member Emily Young.
2007: First Church becomes one of three area churches to serve weekly meals at the Harrisonburg area Salvation Army Shelter.
2008: First Church sends a total of three members to Sudan to continue work on "Project Nimule".
2008: Derek Young, celebrates 20 years of service to First Church of the Brethren as Director of Youth and Adult Ministries.
2009: First Church continues its outreach on a global scale by sending supplies and one member to Niumule, Sudan. First Church also sends two groups of members to Chalmette, Louisiana to help rebuild houses that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
2010: First Church of the Brethren wins Third Place in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Campaign for money raised during the 2010 Kettle Drive.
2010: The First Church of the Brethren Children's Christmas Parade Float wins First Place for Best Float in the Churches/Religious catagory in the Harrisonburg Christmas Parade.
