These figurative paintings are as much about the interplay of the flat painting surface with the illusion of three dimensional space as they are about the sensual beauty of the female form. Background and foreground trade places to challenge the viewer's preconceptions of where space should begin and end. Pictorial composition encompasses both time and three apparent spatial dimensions, as the eye is allowed to follow its natural course through various planes of focus. The figures themselves are lifelike, sumptuous, beautiful, mysterious, sometimes playful and humorous, at ease with themselves and at home in their space -- happily oblivious to the artistic and compositional machinations at work around them. Nudes are presented straightforwardly, neither shocking nor coy. The apparent simplicity of some of the images belies subtle layers of complexity that linger on the visual palate, as a convincing illusion is created of a world which invites one to enter, spend some time, look around and discover things not seen at first glance. Art can be stimulating rather than pedantic, enriching rather than morbid, transporting rather than reporting.

The "Live Canvas" paintings are each made from a single continuous canvas surface wrinkled/stretched/wrapped on a wood frame. In these works, the canvas abandons its traditional role as a passive flat surface for the application of pigment.; it comes "alive" and boldly competes for status as a medium in its own right. The tension between order and chaos is paramount. Early pieces ca. 1969-70, used dyed gray canvas; late 70's works explored thinner profiles and both plain and striped canvas. "Live Canvas No. 14" (1986) introduced painted shapes to the mix, while in 2008 "Live Canvas No. 15" resumed that exploration and "Live Canvas No. 16" returned to an unpainted surface. "Live Canvas No. 17" combined the artist's conceptual and abstract canvas with his illusionist figure paintings, creating a contrapuntal yet harmonic compositional interplay between the painted illusion of three dimensional space and the actual three dimensional surface.

John Vistaunet, formerly from Marysville, WA now lives and works in Florence, AZ, painting in oils, soft pastels and mixed media. He studied art at Mountain View Academy, Andrews University and Everett Community College. The techniques displayed in the works on thie site, however, are principally self taught. Giclée prints of most works (excluding "Live Canvas" pieces) are available.
