THE SCHOOL SONG
Let us now with thankfulness
Praise the founders of our school
Let us now with thankfulness
Praise the founders of our school
For their foresight and devotion
Some who came across the ocean
Some Malaya's own sons
All true Victorians
Let us next remember here
All who pass through this our school
Let us next remember here
All who pass through this our school
Not one race but one in feeling
For a school to each appealing
That instruction be not all
Nor this school just roof and wall
Let us lastly pledge ourselves
Ever to uphold our school
Let us lastly pledge ourselves
Ever to uphold our school
In our work and in our leisure
With such zeal and in such measure
That the new Victorians
Match with old Victorians

CLARE COLLEGE
The Venue for our Grand Celebration
Clare College - Cambridge University's second oldest college, was founded in 1326. It was named after
Lady de Clare, the grand daughter of King Edward 1.
The college has magnificent buildings and is flanked on one side by King's College. It also has lovely grounds to the rear known as the "Backs" which overlook the serene River Cam . A footpath along the Backs from Clare Bridge leads to Memorial Court, where the college's students are housed.
The college's Great Hall is one to be marvelled at and Victorians attending the Grand Celebration 2012 will have the unique opportunity to dine here!

CAMBRIDGE CAMBRIDGE - A SNAPSHOT
LOCATION - Cambridge City lies approximately 55 miles N E of London. Its nearest international airport is at Stansted - about 30 minutes drive away. It caters mainly for short to mid-haul flights. However, Air Asia* flights to UK do land here. From London, Cambridge is easily accessed by rail and road. Frequent trains run from both King's Cross and Liverpool Street stations and the journey time is about one hour. The M11 motorway gives fast road access from London.
HISTORY - The iron age saw evidence of a Belgic tribe occupying Cambridge and then with the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 40,
the Castle Hill area of Cambridge became a military outpost for defending the River Cam that flows here. The Romans called this place "Duroliponte". Then came the Saxons who renamed it "Grantabridge" (as the River Cam was then known) followed by the Vikings in AD 875. After the Norman invasion of 1066 (Battle of Hastings), Cambridge came under William of Normandy's control.
The Round Church in Cambridge - the second oldest church in England, dates back to this period.
THE BEGINNINGS OF CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY - The fierce rivalry between between Oxford and Cambridge Universities is well known. So it is somewhat intriquing that over 800 years ago, disgruntled scholars from Oxford who migrated to Cambridge played a part in the founding of Cambridge University! The the first university college - Peterhouse, was founded in 1284. In medieval times, colleges were founded so that students would pray for the souls of their founders, hence they are often associated with chapels and
and abbeys. CLARE COLLEGE, founded in 1326 is the second oldest college of the university. It was named after Lady de Clare, a grand-daughter of King Edward 1.
Today, there is a total of 31 colleges catering for nearly 18,000 students. Cambridge is but a small city but what it lacks in physical stature is more than compensated for by the presence of its great and world famous University, an institution that has fostered so many great and famous names - Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, J M Keynes, Charles Babbage ,Ernest Rutherford, Stephen Hawking, Henry Cavendish, John Herschel, John Maynard Keynes, Thomas Gray, S T Coleridge and so on - indeed, the list seems endless!
THE GRAND CELEBRATION VENUE - It is apt therefore that we, the VIOS UK Committee has chosen Clare College, Cambridge as the venue for Victorians to come together to rejoice and celebrate the glory of the V I. Of course we cannot compare the V I to this exalted college but we can aspire to the greatness, history, culture and glory that it exudes.
When you stroll through the streets of Cambridge, you cannot help but notice and admire the university colleges and grounds that
dominate the city. When you venture into any college building, you are bound to sense and feel the historical ambience and atmostphere that pervade. It is an experience that you cannot afford to miss! *Air Asia no longer go to Stansted - Aug 2011
NOW, SIT BACK, GO TO "GALLERY" AND ENJOY SOME VIEWS OF CAMBRIDGE AND ITS FAMOUS UNIVERSITY COLLEGES!
