The Maltese are lively little toy dogs, bred to be cuddly companions and thrive on love and attention. While they were first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888, they are one of the oldest breeds.
Originating from the Mediterranean island of Malta, they were favored by noble women, who carried them around in their sleeves. They remain popular because of their cuteness.
Ideally, they weigh 4- 7 lbs, and have black noses with round dark eyes, surrounded by darker skin pigmentation (called a "halo"), which give Maltese their expressive look. The white coat is silky, hypoallergenic and non-shedding.
We chose maltese not only because of their size and beauty, but also because of their disposition.
Their one goal in life is to be your companion, and though lively, they can also be content on your lap for hours at a time, unlike many of the other toy breeds.
What we did not know, is that we had stumbled onto the perfect breed!
