The historical interest of Frankfort includes it being burnt to the ground during the Anglo Boer War during the Battle of Tafelkop on 20 December 1901. Also, for a short period of time, Frankfort was the seat of the-then Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek government.
At Rooster's B&B we have two rooms, each in a distinct style.

There is ample storage space for those on extended visits and a laundry service.
The WINTER ROOM has two three-quarter beds. The SPRING ROOM has a queen size bed and a desk, well suited to the business traveller and to couples without children.
Bath towels and all bedding are of luxuriously high quality.
When it comes to cuisine at Rooster's Bed and Breakfast, you can enjoy your own braai or take advantage of South African country-style cooking in our dining room.
You may also request a picnic basket of country style fare to enjoy on a day trip or special evening out in the country watching a special Free State sunset.
We use only farm-fresh ingredients, including eggs, local lamb, chicken and beef, plus organic vegetables and herbs grown in our own garden.
"The Wild Rose" is a restaurant close-by.
Your hosts at Rooster's Bed and Breakfast are Ben and Alta.
We were involved in the forestry industry for more than 20 years in various parts of South Africa. Ecotourism was also one of the divisions in which we gained experience. We eventually decided to settle in the open farm land plains of Frankfort in the Free State.
This has allowed us to explore our love of the hospitality industry and our various past-times. For Ben this includes woodwork and gardening and for Alta it is art. Her work is available from a local decor and gift shop in Frankfort called Pandora's Box, which is close to Rooster's B&B. There you will also find paintings and crafts by local artists and crafters.

Frankfort is situated 55 km east of Heilbron and approximately 120 km south-east of Sasolburg. The R34 provincial road from Kroonstad to KZN is adjacent to the town. Frankfort is 150 km from Johannesburg and 200 km from Pretoria and is en route the Grasslands Meander.
Some 130 years ago, when many small farms and settlements began to make an appearance throughout the fertile regions of the Northern Free State, it was decided to erect a central church for the district. Frankfort was selected and the first church was erected in 1873 on the corner of Bauman- & Brand (JJ Hadebe) streets. The periodical "nagmaal" services, which attracted the inhabitants from miles round, were responsible for the first permanent residents. Many of the farmers travelled long distances with their families to attend the services, and, as the ox-wagon and Cape cart were the only means of transport, farmers were compelled to remain in the neighbourhood for a while to rest their animals. Businessmen, forseeing their opportunity, erected shops to cater for the needs of these temporary residents, and thus the town of Frankfort came into being.
During the Anglo Boere-war, with the "Battle of Tafelkop" on 20 December 1901, the whole town was burnt to the ground. Nothing could be saved. But, out of the ashes, Frankfort rose again. In May 1901, for a short period of time, Frankfort was the seat of the Republican Government.
Frankfort is the capital town of the Mafube Municipality and situated on the banks of the Wilge River, just south of the Vaal Dam. Frankfort lays 1,563 meters above sea level. The landscape around the town is particularly scenic during the summer with willow trees lining the banks of the river while cosmos flowers beautify the region in the early winter. The businesses of the town are the heartbeat of the area. Centrally situated, Frankfort boasts with several vibrand businesses which have attained international recognition. A good example is the Clover SA factory which manufactures well known quality products nationally and internationally.
The constant flowing Wilge River supplies water to the town and its industries in abundance. Water intensive industries find the town, with plenty labour available, well suited to their needs. Frankfort also provides opportunities for the tourism industry. Agriculture plays a very important role in the whole Mafube area which is particularly well known for the production of maize. Intensive livestock farming is also practiced on a large scale to such an extent that the area has become the largest producer of red meat in South Africa. A network of small retail businesses supplements larger companies who have branches in Frankfort to meet the need of the consumers in the area.
