The United Way of Cattaraugus County, Inc. is an organization guided by an impressive group of Board members, community leaders, and volunteers who are committed to "improving lives by mobilizing resources to meet the needs of our communities."
UWCC proudly celebrates our 90th year serving local residents - beginning as the "Unified Welfare Association". In 1921, a group of caring visiting nurses and area doctors formed what is now the United Way of Cattaraugus County. When treating medical patients for polio, tuberculosis, and other medical conditions, these professionals discovered that non-medical conditions of poverty hindered treatment success. So, a fund was started to assist with unmet needs, evolving into the "Community Chest", and then "United Way of Olean Area". In 1999, the organization was recognized as serving the entire county and was renamed "United Way of Cattaraugus County, Inc." The history and mission of United Way remains constant and we continue to offer the same ease of giving where each donation serves many and donors do not need to make a difficult choice between local organizations.
Our main goal is to raise funds and distribute those monies to local agencies that have demonstrated success in developing quality programs that meet community needs. This is not an easy task, as we must continually stay aware of our ever-changeing environment - in regards to both needs and resources. We currently fund over 18 agencies throughout Cattaraugus County that collectively assist over 20,000 residents annually.
