Brown Sugar _ Penn Dental Diwali 2009

ISDA is a young, vibrant and highly active organization at University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. It aspires to be a social as well as a professional club that serves its members at a multitude of levels. It aims to promote cultural awareness and celebrate the cultural values throughout the dental school and community by hosting various events and functions. It also provides the students with an opportunity to network with practicing Indian dentists. Furthermore, it strives to encourage and educate the greater Indian community on health.

ISDA co-sponsors Dr. Goyal's portrait12 May 2010On Wednesday, May 12th at 5:30 pm in Sig Seigal, ISDA along with the Restorative Department hosted a ceremony in the memory of the late Dr. Bal Goyal and unveiling his portrait which was installed in the Evans building as you go up the steps from the basement, between the two doors.Dr. Goyal graduated from Penn Dental and was a pre-clinical instructor here for about 30 years until he passed away in 2008. He taught many of the current GRD and clinical faculty members at the school. Some of you may remember him from the videos we watched during the dentures course. Remember how it took him about 15 min to set an entire arch of denture teeth perfectly, while it took us about 3 days? Regardless, I guarantee you will not graduate from this school without hearing his name at least once. ISDA and the Restorative Department have worked jointly and independently to raise money for Dr. Goyal's portrait.This is a historic event as ISDA will be the first student-run organization that has contributed towards a portrait and this will be the FIRST portrait in the history of Penn Dental of an Indian faculty member!!

ISDA was established in April 2008 by Nishit Shah (D'10) and Prem Patel (D'10). ISDA is a young, vibrant and highly active organization at University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. It aspires to be a social as well as a professional club that serves its members at a multitude of levels. It aims to promote cultural awareness and celebrate the cultural values throughout the dental school and community by hosting various events and functions. It also provides the students with an opportunity to network with practicing Indian dentists. Furthermore, it strives to encourage and educate the greater Indian community on issues relating to oral health.

ISDA has been one of the most active student associations at UPSDM. The range of activities arranged include Potluck, Fall Outdoor Movie Night, Tutoring Sessions, Member Appreciation dinners, Residendcy Panel, Spring Outdoor movie night and our biggest event-Diwali Night. We also participate in Holi and Navratri with Penn undergrad South Asia Society. ISDA has also been active in community activities such as Philabundance and National Gandhi Day. Some of the future events to look forward to are Bowling/Ice skating, Hot Chocolate/ Cookie Social, Holi, Outdoor BBQ, and Summer Research Panel.One of the biggest upcoming community service activity in 2010 is National Gandhi Day which ISDA will be cohosting with SAS and Sig Rho. Please refer to calender for more details on our events.

Fall Semester:Outdoor Movie NightMovie nights are open to the entire student body, held in the Fonseca Gardens to enjoy warm weather and Indian snack. PotluckAn incredible time with all ISDA members to enjoy delicious food, games, music, and lots of fun. Diwali Diwali Night 2008 was the defining event that established ISDA as a prominent organization at Penn Dental. It is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most awaited ISDA event of the year. Tickets sale starts a month in advace because they sell fast. Rangoli is decorated in front of Schattner. The night begins with welcome and introduction, followed by entertainment while appetizer is served. Penn dental's dance group Brown Sugar and other undergrad dance groups such as Penn Naach and Quaker Raas have performed in the past. Dinner is served while guests enjoy live entertainment. All guests are presented with a gift. Bowling/Ice SkatingFun night with friends, filled with entertainment . Summer Opportunities PanelA panel held for all freshman to assist with summer plans. Past research ideas, locations, and other opportunities will be discussed with upperclassmen. Spring Semester:Hot Chocolate/ Cookies/ SmoresExams are stressful and what best way to relieve stress but chocolate. Stop by in the atrium and grab some hot chocolate, coookies or make yummy smores ;)Residency PanelA special Q and A session arranged for all ISDA members with residents from Ortho, Endo, Perio, OS and GPR. The panel answers questions about when to start preparing for the application process, how to grade various programs, what to look for in a program, etc. HoliFor the first time in 2010, ISDA will hold its own holi. So please come out and spray the joy of colors. Member's Appreciation DinnerA dinner held annually to mark the transition from old board ro new board, welcome incoming PASS class and say farewell to seniors. This event has been so much fun, filled with excitedment, games, dance, music, and of course delicious food. BBQIts almost the end of the year and we know that you will miss your ISDA friends and friendly events. So one last get together before the summer sun bring its fun.Dental Anatomy TutoringTutoring is arranged for the Dental Anatomy section of the National Boards Part I examination open to all second year students.

Community Service Activities:National Gandhi DayBe the Change is a national day of service coordinated by South Asian American Leading Together (SAALT) on Oct 2 to honor the outstanding selfless services provided by Mahatma Gandhi to our commuity. For the first time in 2010, Be the Change will be on Penn campus. ISDA will cohost this event in collaboration with Penn undergrad organizations such as South Asia Society and Psi Omega Rho. This will the biggest community service event of ISDA. Please volunteer to provide service to your community and be the change to bring the change you wish to see in the world!!!

President (1)- One rising senior - Should already be on the existing board in order to run for the position- Responsible for arranging and conducting all General Body and Board meetings- Responsible for planning and executing activities for the year- Resolve conflicts within or surrounding ISDA- Maintain a positive environment within the organization- Improve association with other organizations at Dental School as well as outside of the Dental SchoolVice President (1)- Does the actual work of the presidentTreasurer(1)- strong commitement towards the organization- No prior involvement on ISDA Board required- Keep monthly log of ISDA account & present the account status to the co-presidents prior to each Board meeting- Conduct fundraising activities- Apply for funding from executive coucil (each semester) and GAPSA- Get price quotes for food/furniture rentals/etc for Diwali Night stuffSecretary(1)- strong commitement towards the organization- No prior involvement on ISDA Board requiredDuties:Record the minutes of each General Body Meeting and Board Meeting- Responsible for communicating all officer responsibilities to each other- Maintaining and organising all records and forms of ISDA- Act as historian and maintain a database of all events held- Work on preparing database of all Alumni- Reach out to Alumni to inform them about ISDA, upcoming and past events- Invite alumni to all events- Reach out to Alumni to collect funds, sponsorships etc- Enlist support for IDA eventuallyCultural/Social Chair(2)- strong commitement towards the organization- No prior involvement on ISDA Board requiredDuties:- Arrange celebrations on major cultural events - Arrange events which help propagate Indian culture- Work with other South Asian Societies within Penn and other schools on cultural events like garba, holi etc.- Responsible for publicizing all ISDA General Meetings and events aling with secretary- Responsible for logistics of any social event like members dinner,movie night,parties, sports tournament etc- Will work with the secretary to design and distribute invites for any event as also work on the publicity1st year representatives (number of positions to be decided next year)- One member recruited form every year's freshman class- Responsible for arranging and helping with oganization activities-Help delegate and recuirt membes for ISDA-Serves as a relay between ISDA and freshman class
