This is the website for the Pan-Hellenic Council here at the University of Maryland, College Park.The Pan-Hellenic Council epitomizes unity here at Maryland and is the governing body over eight historically black fraternities and sororities, as well as one Latina sorority. On August 13, 1971, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated became the first Black Greek Letter Organization at the University of Maryland. At that time it could not become a member of the NPHC because all of the divine nine organizations had to be chartered on this campus in order for an NPHC chapter to be chartered. Therefor, the historically Black fraternities were members of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the historically Black sororities were members of The Panhellenic Association (PHA).
In the fall of 1976, the University of Maryland chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council was created. The council was finally complete when Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated joined in 1996.
During the 1970s, it became the duty of Black Greek Letter Organizations to come together to fight on behalf of all against discrimination and fight for equal treatment. BGLOs put on programs to empower and uplift the African American community. This trend continues to be reflected in the programming that PHC chapters put on today.
In addition to their individual efforts, PHC chapters joined together to facilitate programs such as Meet the Greeks, an informational forum for students to ask questions and learn about PHC fraternities and sororities.
