Developmental changes prompted me to record my experience of the woodland behind my home, that once was accessible to me.
The woods were within the grounds of old gardens which contained protected trees, such as a rare Ginkgo Biloba.
Living so close to the woods gave me the opportunity to observe and study detail daily. I wanted to get close to the subject, to reflect that intimacy with nature, and to preserve those moments.
Staring into fire can relax, mesmerise, or evoke quiet reflection. Flares and shapes emerge and disappear in split seconds, with a ferocity the eye cannot register, I was intrigued; how would the flames appear, frozen in time? A camera allowed me capture shapes, patterns, and rhythms, normally unseen.
In other work I have explored the light, texture, and flow of fabrics. Fire fascinated me with its similarities; the rhythm and relationship with the flow of air directing the flames. Burning different materials created diverse images; nuances of colour, changes in ferocity, some sparking fire ribbons, or rivulets of flame. Others, large, billowing bursts, or tiny fireballs. This amazing secret world of fluidity and life filled me with enthusiasm to create this collection.

Our eyes scan and flit around our everyday world, often leaving little things unseen, unappreciated - the detail lost in an overwhelming wealth of visual information.
My paintings reflect my interest in the study of the minutiae of the landscape, a macro vision of the natural world that gives focus to the small details and natural cycles. I paint these small details onto large canvases in order to accentuate and bring attention to the significant yet often overlooked aspects of our environment. Isolating and enlarging a subject intensifies the focus, allowing a thorough visual absorption of a small part of a very large world.
My aim is to communicate a sense of intimacy with nature, creating tightly framed close up compositions that celebrate and highlight the individual nuances of the natural world. I seek to capture fleeting moments, to savour and record the elusive and ever changing elements of nature.
Landscapes are unique because of their individual geographical, geological and ecological make up; the very structure of which is the fine tuned balance of all the component parts – the small details. The appeal of detailed study is in the exploration, and understanding of the object of observation, a way of attempting to understand the natural world.
