Meet Girls For A Change, our National Philanthropy. GFC was founded in San Jose, California by Niko Everett and Whitney Smith, and is quickly spreading across the nation, promoting a mission of empowering girls for personal and social transformation.

Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. fully believes in and supports Girls For a Change and the world of good that they're doing for our young women our there.

History

National HistoryIn the spring of 1996, Founding Monarch Melissa Jo Murchison-Blake was in search of sisterhood. She wanted to be part of a family that openly embraced all women and crossed cultural boundaries. As a bi-racial woman, she did not want to choose between historically Caucasian or African-American sororities. Founding Monarch Murchison-Blake felt that if she could choose one, she would deny half of her heritage.Still wanting to be part of a strong sisterhood, Founding Monarch Murchison-Blake recruited six other women to join hands in her quest to found Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority. At first, the Founding Monarchs were discouraged from fulfilling their vision. The Director of Greek Affairs advised them to consider joining an existing organization, expressing his concern that a new Greek organization, based on the principle of multiculturalism, would not survive at UNC-Chapel Hill. However, the Founding Monarchs believed there was a need for such a sisterhood. their efforts set the stage for Theta Nu Xis presence in the Greek, non-Greek, and surrounding communities.After much work and dedication, the Founding Monarchs built the foundation for Theta Nu Xi. Finally, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill officially recognized Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority as the Alpha Chapter on April 11, 1997. With the collaborative efforts of the Founding Monarchs and the Sisters of Spring 1998, the organization grew beyond our expectations. The Sorority incorporated on April 29, 1999, and with the participation of the Alpha Chapter and Beta and Gamma Colonies, the National Organization was founded at the first annual National Convention on August 21, 1999.Xi Alpha HistoryPicture it.New York City, 2001.Three Theta Nu Xi Alumna were glad to cross paths after each had graduated from her respective college and chapter to embark upon the rest of her life. Founding Monarch Janelle Poe was living in Brooklyn and working as an associate buyer for Macy's, in pursuit of her fashion career. Soror Holly Woodard resided on Staten Island and worked at Credit Suisse First Boston, learning about the stock market while she decided what to do next. Founding Monarch Melissa Murchison-Blake was temporarily living in Brooklyn also, having moved back to NY to accept a teaching position at a charter school.Over the course of spending time together, they talked of starting a GAP chapter as soon as another soror moved to the area. Their plan came to fruition when Rebecca Treherne arrived at Holly's house with the intent of staying until she found a place of her own. Holly, Melissa, and Rebecca ended up moving together into an apartment in Queens.A headquarters was established and the stage was set. Over Sunday brunches during the spring of 2002, the four women worked out the details and prepared their petition to the National Board. The Xi Alpha Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was founded in the New York City metro area on April 11, 2002, the fifth anniversary of the founding of the Alpha Chapter at UNC-Chapel Hill.
