No One Saw It Coming
No one saw it coming. How many times have you heard that statement about the current economic crisis? Well, some folks did see it coming. Congressman Ron Paul, financial commentator Peter Schiff, and best-selling author Thomas Woods all saw it coming. And so did many others who are educated in the tradition of the Austrian school of economics.
What is Austrian Economics?
During the 1920s, while the rest of the world was heralding the rise of a new economy--one that would remain in a perpetual quasi-boom state--one economist was telling anyone who would listen that the new economy was unsustainable. That the prosperity that this economy created was an illusion fueled by cheap money and credit. And that when the boom finally ended, the bust that followed would be massive and horrific. That man was Ludwig von Mises and he was talking about the Great Depression. Much like today, with the exception of Mises, no one saw the Great Depression coming. But because his defense of an unfettered free market was not fashionable at the time, Mises was ignored and ridiculed by the mainstream, and the forces of statism relegated Mises and the Austrian tradition of economic thought that he championed to near obscurity. Now, thanks to the failure of central planning, Austrian economics is experiencing a renaissance.
The Mises Institute is the preeminent organization devoted to study of Austrian economics. The Tennessee Liberty Alliance is raising funds to bring some of the great scholars associated with the Mises Institute to east Tennessee in order to hold a seminar in Austrian economics designed for high school-aged students. With the free market under attack from every angle, it is vitally important to expose young people to the ideas of individual liberty and free market economics, but we need your help to make this happen.
As many of you know, TLA president Fred Childress was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in July of this year. Fred devoted his life to defending liberty and resisting tyranny. The TLA board and membership could think of no better tribute to Fred than to continue his lifes work of outreach and education, especially among young people, by sponsoring this event.
Currently, we are planning to hold this event sometime in the spring of next year in the Knoxville-Oak Ridge area. But, again, we need your help. The media, academia, and the political establishment have once again lined up in opposition to the ideas of individual liberty and free markets. It is up to us to expose our young people to these ideas. Won't you please help in this very important mission?
Please help us sponsor this event by making a donation. Thank you in advance.

Motorcycle Wreck Claims Life of TLA President
Tennessee Liberty Alliance President Fred Childress was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on Saturday July 24th. He had embarked upon a four-week solo motorcycle journey across the country that began on July 4th. He was making his way home, traveling through northern Montana near the Glacier National Park when the accident occurred. The most recent information can be found in this article in the OakRidger.
Fred was a co-founder of the Tennessee Liberty Alliance and served as it's president. He was a strong Libertarian that fought the fight for individual liberty and freedom wherever he went. An entrepreneur, Fred was active in local politics and was well known and respected in local, state and national Libertarian circles. He never hesitated to take the time from his busy schedule to share his point of view with anyone interested in listening.
We have set up a Tribute Page for Fred. Please visit and view the many comments and contributions from those whose life Fred touched. You may submit your own as well.

Happy Earth Day? Thank Capitalism
This classic CATO article was first published in the New York Sun, April 22, 2003. "Wealth not only breeds environmentalists, it begets environmental quality. There are dozens of studies showing that, as per capita income initially rises from subsistence levels, air and water pollution increases correspondingly. But once per capita income hits between $3,500 and $15,000 (dependent upon the pollutant), the ambient concentration of pollutants begins to decline just as rapidly as it had previously increased. This relationship is found for virtually every significant pollutant in every single region of the planet. It is an iron law. Given that wealthier societies use more resources than poorer societies, such findings are indeed counter intuitive. But the data don't lie. How do we explain this?"
- Jerry Taylor is director of natural resource studies at the Cato Institute.
"Theres a whole new world of global warming science today, but few people hear about it. In recent years, an internally consistent body of scientific literature has emerged that argues cogently for global warming but against the gloom-and-doom vision of climate change. But those who merely call attention to this literature are intimidated, blacklisted, and even driven from prestigious scientific employment. Calling the current scientific environment a climate of extremes is an understatement." See full article here

Local Tea Party Advocates Limited Government
Congratulations to the new Anderson County Tea Party. Freedom lovers and patriots within the county have come together to form a group of activists who could play a key role in keeping our elected officials aware of the proper role of our "limited" government.
"Anderson County Tea Party chairman John Rice said the local organization, which could become a nonpartisan nonprofit, was formed in February and was inspired by other groups across the country. Attendance at three local meetings has about doubled from 43 people to roughly 85." See full article here.
The Tea Party movement has paralleled a movement among independents altering support for Obama and power grabbing Democrats. According to this article in the Politico.com by by David Boaz and David Kirby, libertarians are leading this shift from Obama.
"A careful look at polling data shows these voters may be less mysterious than analysts think.
Libertarians seem to be a leading indicator of this trend in centrist, independent-minded voters, based on an analysis of many years of polling data. We estimate that libertarians compose from 14 percent to 23 percent of voters nationally. They are among the few real swing voters in U.S. politics.
Libertarian voters are often torn between their aversion to the Republicans social conservatism and the Democrats fiscal irresponsibility.
These days, they are angry about spending, deficits and government takeovers but less motivated by social issues. Libertarians are slightly more likely to be male, white, independent and moderate than the general public." See full article here.

The Tennessee Liberty Alliance is a non-partisan organization, born from a group of like-minded individuals that believe a constitutional government is the best form of government. One that has as it’s core purpose, the protection of the individual rights and liberties of the citizens it serves. Truly a society governed “by the people, for the people.”
Our belief is that the civil liberties of the citizens are steadily and systematically being chipped away by an ever expanding government, and that this monstrosity of a government we have now was not the intention of the founding fathers.
Therefore, it is the belief of the Tennessee Liberty Alliance that our government at all levels has usurped powers not provided it by the constitution creating our republic. We believe that we must take back these powers from government in order to restore our proud republic to the principles of liberty and freedom for all.
Our mission, quite briefly, is to educate. Educate the people about their government, and just how far it has come from what were the hopes and dreams of the founding fathers. We believe that revolution is necessary, but not one of violence. Instead, a revolution of ideas that will strike to the core of any individual that has felt the empowerment of the freedom of liberty. It will be this revolution of ideas that will have the biggest impact on the status quo. When the people of this land begin to awaken to the idea of what is being, and what already has been taken from them, they will rise up and be a strong voice that will demand real change.
We welcome your comments and discussion as we grow as an organization that will make a difference in national politics, by first influencing change in the local and state political scene through peaceful participation. Please check back often as we grow and consider how you could help in our mission. If you would like more information on how to get involved with the TLA, either as a member of a local chapter or, perhaps, beginning a local chapter of the TLA in your area, submit a request for more information via email (tnliberty.org_gmail.com). One of our officers will contact you with assistance as soon as possible.
