This team will be held accountable for researching and sharing educational resources related to the Maine Handicapped Skiing organization. Read this notebook to see what they're doing!
11-28-11: White and Blue Day
We contacted MHS to schedule an interview with them and we met Eric Topper, the Director of Outreach for MHS. We worked with the film team to do the interview during class when Mr. Topper came in to visit us. We also interviewed a THS student who is a MHS participant. We learned a lot more about MHS and we will share this in the ArtReach film, which will premiere at 6:30pm at the ArtReach event on 12/8/11 at Telstar. We also started talking to Mr. Topper about plans for future volunteer field trips. We'd like to schedule our first one for a Thursday or Friday in January 2012.
11-10-11: Blue Day
This week we made a letter to send to our contact person for Maine Handicap Skiing. We haven't sent to them though, and are still looking over it.
11-9-11-White Day
We contacted MHS with help with Ms. Prescott and we told them that we wanted to help them. They are very happy that we chose to help them and we will be interviewing one of their staff in the next couple weeks for our film. We also came up some questions for an interview with an student who was helped by MHS.
11-8-11: Blue Day
This week we made a rough draft for a e-mail we will sent to the Maine Handicap Skiing, to see if they could come in to talk to us about what they do. We are still working to revise this letter.
11-1-11: White Day
We learned more about the MHS Ski-A-Thon event. If you make a team and raise $200 dollars or more you get a free lunch, shirt, and other things. What we could do is make a pledge for the amount of money we raised for MHS. We would have to call and talk to the to see what else we could do to help..... some ideas are, helping them open up, organize paperwork, we might be able to learn how they use some of there equipment. We would have to see them about that though...
10-27-11: Blue Day
This week we got more information about MHS. We might start a new project about
the information we found.

We researched on the Maine Handicapped Skiing (MHS) website and found information on the founder, where the location is, and information about their mission:
MHS is a completely nonprofit organization. They have a fundraiser every year called the Ski-A-Thon. During the Ski-A-Thon people make teams and find people to donate to money to MHS. They have volunteers every year to help them work with the people who need it. They take time out of their life to help these people with no pay at all. This is for people with disabilities, its free to join.
This organization was founded in 1982 by Dr. Omar (an orthopedic surgeon) and Leslie B. Otten (founder of American Skiing Company). It was the first ski organization in Maine for people with physical disabilities.
The website for MHS is http://www.skimhs.org/, the mailing address is 8 Sundance Lane, Newry, ME 04261. You could also find it by going on the bunny hill at Sunday River.
