Parody writer Mormonizes popular songs
By Molly Farmer
Mormon Times
Friday, Jul. 18, 2008
A CD that spoofs pop music and Mormon culture will be released in August by a New York native who sees a need for upbeat songs with a good message.
Steve Nunez grew up in a home that welcomed missionaries in Long Island, and during one of the many dinnertime chats Nunez had as a teenager with the elders, he found that the suited young men with name tags missed more than just their families and hometowns -- they missed their familiar pop music.
"They'd say 'We really want to listen to it, but we can't listen to it... we don't want to be apostate missionaries. The music is fine, but the lyrics we can't listen to,'" Nunez said. "That gave me the idea 'why don't I just change (the lyrics) then?'"
The next time the Nunez family fed the elders, he sang his spoof version of the Spice Girls' "Wannabe," which he re-purposed to be "If You Wannabe an Elder."
"They thought it was hilarious. They thought it was the best thing ever," he said. "They encouraged me to write more."
Since then, the 28-year-old, who now lives in Orem, Utah, has written -- make that, re-written -- 65 songs. His album "Quorum of the Rock" will be distributed by Halestorm Entertainment next month.
It includes parodies "Hey BYU girl," a take on the Plain White T's "Hey Delilah," and "The Story of Nephi," a parody of Nine Days' "Story of a Girl."
Even his band name, "They Might Be Elders," is a spoof on the quirky alternative group "They Might Be Giants."
To call "They Might Be Elders" a band might be a stretch, though, as Nunez is a one-man show, writing and singing the different parts on all of the songs.
When he performs, which he does sporadically though shows are picking up, he's not alone as he's enlisted the help of background dancers. A friend named Hannah Rugg choreographed a routine inspired by one she had seen done for a Miley Cyrus song. Since Nunez has his own version of the teen's song "See You Again" which Nunez has converted to "People of Worth," she used it as a starting place.
Rugg has danced since she was growing up in Northern California, and is glad to create routines for five of her friends who along with Nunez perform to Nunez's parodies.
"I kind of just like how he really redid the lyrics to make them church music," she said. "That was inspiring to me."
Rugg didn't meet Nunez until recently, but she's been familiar with his parodies for several years. When she was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was 18, the missionaries gave her a CD that had a few of Nunez's songs on it.
"I liked how there was more of a beat you could dance to, and it was all about the church," she said.
Oftentimes popular music has lyrics that are inappropriate for not only missionaries but general members of the church as well, Nunez said. His song "You Could Be a Mormon " is based off of Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend," which contains some profanity.
"She swears in the song, there's an f-word in there, I'm like 'that's sick,'" Nunez said. "But the music was great." So he changed the chorus to "Hey Hey You You You don't like religion, No Way No Way, I think you need the right one. Hey Hey You could, you could be a Mormon."
Nunez says he tries to "poke fun, but definitely not make fun" of Mormons. He said he prays before he starts writing.
"I always say a prayer before I start a parody," Nunez said, where he asks God to "help me not make fun of anything or be blasphemous in any way."

About Us!
The fresh new (LDS) Mormon Group that is sweeping all of Mormonism with its parody songs! Led by Steve Nunez.
If you don't think this CD is clever, creative, and just hilarious, then you obviously don't own a copy, so go buy one now!
This all started back in the 1990s, first and foremost as a way for the Mormon Missionaries to listen to music that was popular while they were on missions. The original Elders who first heard it gave it such a rave review, Steve Nunez decided to write a bunch more, and eventually there were cassette tapes of terrible recordings of all the songs from the 1990's.
Eventually, better recordings came as did new missionaries, (since they leave every 2 years) they asked for newer music and newer recordings, and eventually, it became what it is today.
Through StoneFive Studios, They Might Be Elders first album, "Quorum of the Rock" was released, with never before heard songs such as "Hey BYU Girl" and "You Could Be A Mormon". His first album has become a hit across the Mormon/LDS community! They Might Be Elders has just released their new Album, "Unabridged Translation", and are excited to keep bringing you the music that you request and love!
Steve Nunez has been donating a portion of every CD sold to the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to be used for Missionary Work.
They Might Be Elders have been performing across the nation at different Wards, Stakes, and Colleges. Look for They Might Be Elders in your area! soon!
