...A Small City called The Lovelady Center...
TLC is a 9-to-12 month program designed to restore hope and rebuild lives. Women and their children enter our program for various reasons, all needing help in their lives. By introducing women and children to Christ, and by offering a multitude of needed services, The Lovelady Center helps women attain a brighter future.
We provide housing and services to approximately 350 women and children daily, including three meals per day, seven days a week. Basic care we supply includes:
Through partnerships with Jefferson State Community College and Tennessee Temple University, women are offered the chance to gain higher education and job skills. Through our Workforce Development Program, women are trained and aided in finding sustainable jobs to ensure a bright future.

During the Fiscal Year of 2008, The Alabama Department of Corrections estimated that the annual cost to house an inmate is $15,223.00. If TLC takes in 100 of those inmates, that's a savings of $1,522,300.00 to Alabama tax payers.

Center History:
The Center began in 2004, when Brenda Lovelady Spahn began a bible study for women in be Julia Tutwiler Prison. As time passed, she noticed that a large amount of women released from prison re-enter within a short timeframe. The Department of Justice Bureau of Statistics recently reported that nearly 68% of prisoners are re-arrested within 3 years of leaving prison, why?
Faith-based programs, and other community re-entry programs are proven to help keep individuals from re-entering prison. Women who are released from prison are challenged by the prospect of finding long-term employment, housing, and more. Programs such as TLC are successful by providing tools for women to re-enter society as productive and esteemed individuals. Alabama has an above average crime rate compared to National averages, yet Alabama also provides the least amount of funding for community re-introduction programs. This causes an increase of incarcerations and re-incarcerations for the State. However through programs such as TLC, which help enact change, the cycle of ciminal behavior is broken. Keeping communities out of the Justice System saves the State, and tax payers money.
Your support helps us unlock the dreams and opportunities for many women and children who are seeking to change their lives. So, please help us keep the doors open and opportunities abounding through time, prayers, goods and financial support!
Thank you for keeping dreams alive!

Brenda Spahn has had an illustrious 30 year career as a motivational speaker and business owner. Early in her career she built a successful consulting business and began to also rehabilitate historical buildings. She has been recognized many times in the Birmingham News for her contributions to the local community, but her prior efforts were a prelude to what became her true passion helping societys unwanted women.
In 1997, Ms. Spahn was called by God to begin a ministry for women and their children. She received ordination and began her work by visiting women in the Jefferson County and Birmingham City jails. The ministry grew and in 2002 she accepted 5 parolees into her home, and thus began the Lovelady program. In 2004, Ms. Spahn purchased the 288,000 square foot old East End Memorial Hospital in Eastlake. By that time there were 40 women in the program. Now called the Lovelady Center, named after her beloved father, the transition program for women and children has grown to 350 women and children.
Brenda Spahn was featured on the national DirecTV Hometown Heroes program in 2009. The show is hosted by Joan Lunden and honors those who show courage, kindness and bravery through personal efforts to help the less fortunate in their communities. Ms. Spahn recently was given the NBC13 Making a Difference award for her personal sacrifice and efforts on behalf of The Lovelady Center.
Over the last five years, Ms. Spahn has been honored by a number of community churches and organizations.
