Often times we hear people speak of their “relationship” with God. This comment may be abstract to some people. You may ask yourself, “how do you develop a relationship with an invisible being?” While the concept of developing a relationship with God may seem foreign to some people; it is actually not as strange as one may think. The same way you build a relationship with your spouse, friends, family, and co-workers, is the same way you build a relationship with God. Ask yourself how you developed the relationships you currently have in your life. The bible teaches that God desires to be in relationship with us (John 15:14-16). Here are a few steps to begin to develop your relationship with God.
1) Relationships begin with getting to know a person. It is the same with God. He created you, therefore He knows all about you, but He wants you to get to know Him. How do you get to know him? Pick up a bible and read his word. Everything you have ever wondered about your creator is within the pages of his word. Find out what he likes and dislikes; what pleases Him’ what are His pet peeves. Find out his personality.
2) Once you get to know Him. Begin to trust Him. No relationship can prosper without trust. God makes several promises in his word. Believe Him, God is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19). If God says he will be with you in six troubles and in seventh he will not forsake you, take Him at his word.
3) Next share your experiences with him. God desires to be present in every aspect of your life. Just like you may call your best friend when something exciting happens to you. God wants you to “call” him as well. When you are happy, sad, angry, making decisions, whatever you are dealing with, God wants to be a part of it.
4) Finally you should be continuously working on your relationship. As you will learn as you build your relationship, God is a loving, merciful, and forgiving God. As humans we can sometimes fall short. We make mistakes. We are not perfect beings, yet even in our imperfections, God still loves and desires us. Just as a parent will still love a child when he/she disobeys, God will still love you when you sin and fall short of his Glory. It’s not about what you’ve done, but how you will correct it and not repeat it.
