The staff of the Crusader Chronicle welcome you to our newspaper. We are students of Sacred Heart Catholic High School of Hattiesburg Mississippi. Our team consists of 7th through 12th graders. We write on a variety of topics:School NewsLocal NewsNational NewsSportsAnd many more!We welcome everyone that has a passion to write and encourage students to come to our meetings that take place Tuesday mornings at 7:30. Our Mission

The mission of the Crusader Chronicle is to promote student awareness of their school and their community. There are also many benefits to being on a student newspaper. Student newspapers help you build a college resume. They also expose students to photography and literature, and allow students to project themselves. When a student sees his or her work in an online newspaper or in a printed work, they feel a sense of self accomplishment and pride.

The Animal Shelter and "YOU" by Veronica Palensky

As you may know the Southern Pines Animal Shelter compassionately serves the Hattiesburg and Petal areas in providing an “Open Admission” shelter for lost, stray, and unwanted animals. In 2010 the animal shelter took in 9,970 animals. Unfortunately, due to the lack of space at the shelter, many animals were humanly euthanized and only 3,329 lives were saved. The animal shelter relies on most of its funding from grants, the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal, and private donors. Now here’s where “you” come in. There are ways that even as a high school student you can help. The most important thing that you can do to help the shelter is to have your animals spayed or neutered. The Southern Pines Spay and Neuter Clinic has been operating since 2009, and as of 2010 they have fixed 7,000 pets. Through spaying and neutering, animal overpopulation and the need to euthanize can be prevented. Okay so now you’re like, “Well I’ve already neutered my pet, how else can I help?” Volunteering is another great way to help out the shelter. I have spent many hours volunteering for the Spay and Neuter Clinic and what they need are teenagers! Since the majority of their volunteers are elderly people, they are in need of some young people to help them do more labor intensive work like, putting together e-collars (those cones that dogs wear), cleaning up kennel rooms, and doing laundry. You can also volunteer at the shelter but you have to be accompanied by a parental guardian. A final way to help the shelter is by supporting fund raisers for the animal shelter like shopping at the new “Second Chance Thrift Store,” buying the 2012 animal shelter calendar, and going to the “No Show Ball.” To find out more information on all the ways that you can help the animal shelter, go to their website at: www.southernpinesanimalshelter.org

Art Walk by Albert Zamoriy

In an effort to promote the Hattiesburg downtown areas as an arts destination, the Hattiesburg Historic Downtown Association holds several art walks annually. The December Art Walk for 2011 was held on December 10th. This was a busy holiday weekend and many other events drew the crowds away fro the usually bustling downtown sidewalks and shops. Although attendance was down visitors enjoyed exhibits at the train depot, Odd fellows Gallery and the Cultural Center. Shops such as the A-Gallery, MacKenzie’s Antique Gallery and the Walnut Street Pharmacy were crowded with people buying Christmas gifts, ornaments and decorations; and also people just admiring. Sacred Hear students Betsy Mercier and Devan Carmichael, asked young Art walk goers to fill out questionnaires for a possible children’s museum in Hattiesburg. Monica Salda, a Sacred Heart High School teacher and resident of the Historic Downtown Hattiesburg Neighborhood, appreciated Art walk but enjoyed the Victorian Candle-lighting even more. Having participated in the event for twenty years, “I look forward every year to hearing the first carriage come around the corner. I love to hear the sleigh bells!” The wither was cool and clear, and the thousands of luminaries were magical.Adam Lopinto, a high school student at Sacred Heart High School and also a resident of the Historic Downtown Hattiesburg Neighborhood, disliked the event, but for a special reason. “Everyone is afraid of my dogs, and with that many people in the neighborhood, they barked non-stop.” While there were differing opinions on the Art Walk and Candle-lighting, the residents of Hattiesburg are looking forward to the next Art Walk, which will be held in the spring.

Christmas Movies by Savannah Wise

It’s that time of year again, the time when TV networks broadcast Christmas movies nonstop. Many families have a tradition of watching a certain movie at Christmas time. The top five Christmas feature films of all time include #1- Die Hard, #2 -Brazil, #3- The Nightmare Before Christmas, #4- 1941, and #5- A Christmas Story. While feature films are nice, most of us will always remember our favorite animated Christmas movie that we watched as children. The top five animated Christmas movies are #1- How the Grinch Stole Christmas, #2- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, #3- A Garfield Christmas Special, #4- A Claymation Christmas Celebration, and #5- Mickey’s Christmas Carol. This year’s Christmas movie is Arthur Christmas. Maybe your families’ favorite made the list.

Hanukkah by Julianna Calabrese

Since we go to a Catholic school, most of us are unfamiliar with the celebration of Hanukkah. But Hanukkah is actually a very important holiday for Christians, because it was a holiday that our ancestors celebrated. Hanukkah, also know as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The Holy Temple in Jerusalem was rededicated after Greek-Syrians under Antiochus IV Epiphanes had destroyed the temple. Those who rededicated the temple witnessed a miracle: when they lit their menorah, a Jewish candelabra, it only had enough oil to last for one day, but in stead it lasted for eighth days. Today, Jewish people light one candle each night for each of the eight days of Hanukkah, while reciting a prayer extolling God who “preformed miracles for your ancestors in days of old.” Jewish people also celebrate Hanukkah by playing with derides, Jewish tops; singing Hebrew songs, such as Maoz Tzur and Sevivon; and eating traditional foods like latkes, potato pancakes, and sufganiyots, oil-fried doughnuts. This year the Jewish people will start the jubilations on December 20th and the festival will end on December 28th. Even though we will not be seeing many menorahs around Hattiesburg, it is important to respect and appreciate the Jewish religion.
