In a unique mentoring initiative students from Newark's Barringer High School were challenged by their PANYNJ mentors to imagime what their FUTURES would look like. From career choice to clothes and hairstyle. Then with the help of our "FASHION MENTORS" the youth were the focus of a real "FASHION SHOOT" and transformed into their future selves!Studies tell us that youth who can clearly see a future for themselves are less likely to engage in risky behavior (teen-age pregnancy, drug use, alcohol use, criminal activity). The students in the "...because we are eagles." mentoring initiative see robust and real futures for themselves and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey mentors assist them in developing a strategy to acheive that future. We are excited about the promise this pilot has shown and are looking forward to expanding the program in September 2010. And to our students...remember when they ask you why you dream so big and fly so high...tell them..."...because we are eagles!"
