BE THE CHANGE. BECOME A MENTOR.
On Friday January 15, 2010 Communities In Schools of New Jersey Mentoring Success Center collaborated with over 30 corporate and community partners (see images at right) to launch {mentored} our first annual national mentoring month celebration. In one incredible week of movie screenings, conferences and other activities we raised high the banner of mentoring in Newark!
This was an ambitious undertaking but Communities In Schools believes that creating a powerful culture of mentoring in Newark and surronding areas is imperative. This is the only way that we can garner the momentum that it will take to provided caring mentors and develop structured mentoring initiatives for the over forty thousand young people in Newark Public Schools alone.
Partners as diverse as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the New Jersey Devils, Kraft Foods, the City of Newark, Mentoring USA, Newark Cares and others helped make this inaugural week a success and week thank you for your partnership.
Most importantly all of our events were designed to have a lasting impact on the youth and families in the City of Newark. Examples are...
1. The "Mentoring and the Faith Based Community Symposium" at Metropolitan Baptist Church and our new relationship with the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace led to a meeting with one of our panelist, Newark Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Fateen Ziyad to develop a new mentoring for the City of Newark Fire Dept. We plan to begin this semester with 20 mentor matches.
2. Our "Conversation between Young Men" event with Social Entreprenuer Divine Bradley has led to an ongoing mentoring initiative with 10 students from the YEES Center /CISNJ Performance Learning Center in Newark. Divine is also now the spokesperson for the "Pepsi Refresh Everything" campaign and our youth will be participating in some of their local activities.
3. The Barringer High School / Port Authority of New York and New Jersey "...because we are eagles." mentoring program has continued to meet and they are growing!
4. We are continuing to work with W. Deen Sharif and the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace to work with our faith based community to a. Develop new mentoring programs. b. Recruit new mentors and c. Host mentoring events.
There is a lot more good news about mentoring on the way. To all that participated/attended our week...THANK YOU. We are dedicated to growing mentoring in Newark and surronding areas and we can only do that with your help.See you next year for an even bigger and better {mentored} celebration!
