HISTORY OF TGA MID-AMATEUR:
The TGA State Mid-Amateur, for players 25 years and older, started in 1988. The first tournament, conducted at match play, was won by Rob Long of Clarksville. He defeated Buzz Fly of Memphis, 3 and 2. Long won three of four tournaments (Tim Jackson won in 1990) before the format was changed to stroke play in 1992 at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs.
Jackson holds honors, having won five tournaments since stroke play was adopted. Jackson is the leader with six titles (match and stroke). Danny Green has finished second a record seven times in the event.
The John Atkins Trophy is annually awarded to the champion of the TGA Mid-Amateur Championship.
John Atkins, a long-time TGA Director, served as the Association’s President in 1950 and 1960.
