Red earth below our feet, red earth surrounds us, Red earth fills foreign eyes with natural wonder*Over the course of three months in the summer of 2010 six photography undergrads documented their individual experiences in the heart of the Navajo Nation in Chinle, AZ. The photographers were invited onto the land and into the homes of the extended Yazzie family without question as they were traveling with one of their own, undergraduate photography and art history major, Tiffiney Yazzie who coordinated the trips. The group stayed deep on the reservation at the ranch side of the family land and was allowed to explore and see a side of the reservation and its monuments that is often inaccessible to outsiders. They were allowed to participate in daily tasks such as shearing sheep, and cooking out of a cooler with the only modern convenience at the second homestead, propane. They also partook in a meal that was personal and stirring for all of them, that of a freshly killed, skinned, and butchered sheep. This show is a culmination of the shared and individual experiences that each photographer had, a way to tell each of their own stories as a group. ______* Inspired by Laura Tohes Libretto Enemy Slayer

Fins For Sharks Not For Soup
Like Tears From The Ocean
Blue But Not For You

These photomosaics are a personal response to the thoughtless actions we as humans make and continue to allow being made towards the life giving waters of the ocean. What becomes of a baby seal after it is clubbed? When will the dolphins stop dying in the gulf coast? Why do they need to kill hundreds of thousands of sharks to sell dried fins to a small portion of the population? When will civilized nations stop slaughtering majestic beasts just because they can? These photographs are made from over 1200 different images that have been appropriated from Google Image searches, the ICR Whale website (Japans "Cetation Research" website), Boycott Canada, Animal Planet, the National Marine Sanctuary Media Library and personal images from the Sea Shepherd Sea No Evil Art Show, I have gathered hundreds of pictures of whales, dolphins, blue fin tuna, Harp seals, sharks, The Glapagos Islands and their endangered inhabitants, the Ross Sea, the Southern Ocean, the Sea Shepherd crew and Captain Paul Watson. These are all images that relate to the causes Sea Shepherd fights for, and the gruesome deaths that they try to prevent. As Richard Dean Anderson said, "They are a fairly aggressive conservation organization that was started to protect the great whales particularly, but in general all marine life around the world. So those are the people I'm trying to attach my name to."

About
About Teresa Valencia
Teresa is also interested in expanding her fine art portfolio. Working more in the "documentary" style she is part of a group that visited the reservation in Chinle, AZ near Canyon de Chelly (Pronounced Canyon de Shea) and photographed a family sheep farm out on one of the mesas. Life is simple and sweet and brought cartain thoughts, ideas, and ways of life to the forefront of our comfortably suburban lifestyles. Her portion of these photographs can be seen under Diné Bikéyah.
Teresa Valencia earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University. She currently resides in Mesa, AZ persuing a career in the photography industry while working on an onging project involving the Arizona Derby Dames. She hopes to see that project culminate in an exhibition at one of the Alumni Galleries of ASU. Roller Derby is not her only concern these days as there is great civil unrest and termoil in her beolved state in regards to laws that are of a questionably racist nature and has been following the public outcry and protests against such targeted legislation.
