We are Solstice, a F1 in Schools collaboration team consisting of six motivated students, two females and four males, from Canada and England. We have been working together since late March, when F1 in Schools announced Canada and England would officially be a collaboration team at the 2011 F1 in Schools Malaysian World Finals.
The English half of Solstice is made up of three students from Robert May's School, located in Hampshire, England. As F1 in Schools team, Blur, we were the 2011 F1 in Schools British champions in the Bloodhound category; along with winning the "Fastest Car" and "Best Marketing and Sponsorship” awards.
The Canadian half of our team is made up of students from Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute, Toronto, Canada. As F1 in Schools team, Avalaunch, we placed 2nd overall at the 2010 F1 in Schools Canadian National Competition.
So far, both sides of our team have had great success in the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge. Our schools have been involved in the challenge for around 5 years.
With our knowledge and ambition, we hope to become the first ever collaboration team to be crowned the winners of the F1 in Schools World Finals as well as have fun throughout the process and enjoy the “"F1 experience of a lifetime”."
The Challenge
F1 in Schools is the world's largest STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) and only multi-disiciplinary competition reaching 34 countries and over 12 million students worldwide.
The competition is open for children aged 9-19 in teams of 3-6 and is aimed at changing their perceptions on science, engineering, technology and math in a fun and compelling way along with many other important skills valubale to student success.
The teams have to design a 1/20 scale model of an F1 racing car using CAD (Computer Aided Design) and then manufacture it using CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) and a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine to be raced at the competition. Along with this, teams also have to create a twenty-page portfolio detailing research and inital ideas on their F1 project and a pit display to market their car.
Teams are required to do all of the aformentioned information above using a budget which they must raise themselves. As such, they are encouraged to set up business partnerships with local companies.
